Downloading maps to PC and Nuvi

This may seem a basic question but why do I need to download (which takes forever) new maps to load onto both the PC AND the Nuvi.?

I use Basecamp for making routes so I question whether this is just duplicating matters for no benefit.

Well some folks, myself included, like to be able to plan routes etc without having the nuvi connected all the time. And for those who use Mapsource it's essential as Mapsource can't read maps off the GPS :)
