Stop labels from showing on all geocaches

While Basecamp is certainly more robust and has lots of features it is missing one (at least as far as I can see). I dump a Pocket Query of Geocaches in (or read from the device) and when I zoom down to plan my day it shows the labels for all of them which obscures the whole map and other caches so I can't plan. In Mapsource I could go to the waypoints column and select all then change it to show only symbols.

In Basecamp I have to do each one individually which would take some time with over a thousand.

Any solutions.
  • I just checked....Basecamp does indeed let me select a bunch of waypoints.....right click on the bunch....click OPEN.....says the number of waypoints selected and you can change all of them to whatever...:o

    Waypoints, yes. Geocaches, NO!!!

Well ya got me on that one. Here I thought Geocaches were just fancy Waypoints.

If Geocaches are such a pain why not convert them to gpx waypoints??

Why should we the users have to go through all that just because Garmin refuses (or is incapable) of making this simple change to a use that existed in Mapsource?

It boggles the mind that they didn't transport at least the most basic ability from Mapsource.

Also waypoints don't show up on the GPS as caches so you can't use the paperless functions.
  • Aw c'mon. You don't need that 'basic ability' as you call it to be able to geocache. I cache as well and am able to use BC quite happily to plan caching days. Yes, it would be great to be able to turn lables off etc but it's no deal breaker.

We are all capable of geocaching without most of the latest gadgetry that's available to us today but getting back on track (pun intended); if the technology is there, then it should be as user-friendly as possible, and the folks that decide whether something is user-friendly or not are us, the users.

I'm not familiar with MapSource as I'm new to GPSr's and geocaching, but I have done some software development and cannot understand why a program with potential for so many obtrusive labels on the screen at one time does not have the 'basic ability' to easily and quickly suppress those labels. I find it more astonishing that when the facility does exist, that it should then be removed on a software 'update'.

For the simple reason that the GPX schema allows MUCH more data to be stored and presented in both Basecamp and on the device. Size, difficulty and terrain ratings, long and detailed descriptions, virtually unlimited cache log postings, etc. Both Basecamp and the devices recognize a Geocache 'waypoint' as being different from plain waypoints and support all these fields. In fact, on the device, standard waypoints and geocaches show up in different menus/lists. The 'Geocache' dashboard setting on the handhelds doesn't even recognize plain waypoints. I consider that a bug, too. With the Geocaching dashboard active, if you navigate to a waypoint that's north, the direction arrow and distance indicator will point you to the nearest geocache instead. If we convert the data type to Waypoint instead, all that helpful data is stripped out.

I know this is stretching the elastic a bit, but I'd like more than just a label toggle. It should be possible to view the map with Geocaches, Routes and Tracks all independently off or on. I'm the proud owner of a brand new Oregon 650t and I'm realising that there is a downside to filling its vast memory with Geocache data: masses and masses of clutter on the map when viewed in Basecamp.

Or have I just not found the means to do those things yet? :)

Edit: Uh-oh. I just realised that I've responded to a post that's a year old, not a few days old. How embarrassing. :o

Er... hang on. This stuff not been fixed after all this time?
  • Just pop them into separate lists ... Basecamp will only show items in a selected list, or all items if you select My Collection.

Yes - that works but it's clunky and moves the clutter on the map to the clutter of additional lists. Some people are never satisfied. ;)

It's odd, because the "data view" on the Basecamp screen does have icons that toggle. They'd need to work slightly differently on the map (to make them independent) but it can't be difficult to make that happen. Well perhaps it is!

Because then you lose all the attributes, descriptions and hints and the 'paperless caching' feature that we bought them for.
