Rino 655t

Hi,
I can't get Basecamp to transfer from the device to the program. I was able, via MapSource, to transfer all my waypoints from my old 60C to the rino, but am unable to move them to Basecamp. Under Device/Receive from Device, no device appears in the box. The Rino is listed in devices on the left sidebar of the program.

Do you see a folder named Internal Storage under the device icon in the left window pane? If you click on it, all your waypoints should be listed in the pane below that. You can just drag some or all of these to the My Collection folder in the library section of the left window pane.

Are you in Garmin Spanner mode ... Setup>System>Garmin spanner?

Basestation mode is for when you want to track the position of other Rino users using Basecamp. Try Sussamb's suggestion, or choose Mass Storage if that is available.

Possibly. But not if you've just installed Basecamp. It only comes with a very basic map.

To see any detailed maps, either with or without topo relief, you either have to install them onto your PC so that Basecamp can read them or have your GPS connected, in which case Basecamp will read the maps off the GPS. Caveat here is that I don't have your GPS so unsure whether the latter works with a Rino :confused:

If you would like to use the topo map without connecting your Rino, copy its entire contents to a USB flash drive (this will also give you a good backup in case of disaster). Now just plug the flash drive into your computer and Basecamp will "think" it's actually connected to the Rino and display the topo map.

I have owned each Rino model, and have always looked forward to Garmin's innovative improvements on each model. I was particularly excited to see BaseStation. I have tested it and have come to the conclusion that it's functionality is limited because of reliance on the attached antenna on the 655t unit. First, what a waste of a perfectly good field unit that must remain attached to the computer. Garmin needs to develop a base unit that attaches to your computer and frees up the portables. This base unit needs to have a FRS antenna attached for communication at one half watt on the FRS channels 8-14, complying with FCC regulations. The unit needs to have a UHF socket for attaching an external antenna for 5 watt transmissions on channels 1 through 7. The base unit should be able to transmit using 25 watts on the 8 GMRS only channels, 15 through 22. These specifications would allow the Garmin Base Station to become a serious tool for hunting, search and rescue, and many other uses. Most users complain of the limited range when using the radio. A unit designed around the use of an external antenna would eliminate much of the criticism. Midland just developed the MXT100 mobile/base GMRS only unit which takes advantage of an external antenna.
