The new version of the Beta is available at http://developer.garmin.com/apps/BC/BaseCampBeta_4.2.0.2.exe.

This version should fix the issue of folders and lists disappearing. If you already ran 4.2.0.1 please use "Restore from previous version" to re-import the 4.1 data with lists and folders intact.

As with all Betas, this is a preview of our next feature release. There will be some rough edges, so make sure you back-up your data before using it.

We are looking for feedback regarding the new features, please let us know what issues you encountered with functionality and usability. Please report any crashes you see, with steps to reproduce if possible.

I compiled some screen-shots of the new stuff at https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?36044-What-s-new-in-BaseCamp-4-2.

The rough list of changes:

Added Trip Planner (work-in-progress)
-adds easy way to create trips
-create trips over several days
-round trip support
-printing trips
-add destinations along the route
-flying support (airport and flight look-up)
-time zone support
Added support for different route profiles for different legs of a route
Added support to have different folders and lists with the same name (as long as they have a different parent in the folder hierarchy)
Added support for UK postal code search
Added support for Yelp search (work-in-progress)
Added support for named search (far away POIs should be found if it's an exact name match)
Added support for category search (you can type "Hotels, Las Vegas, NV")
Added quick search (hover over the map to invoke it)
Added Irish Transverse Mercator grid
Added support for displaying BirdsEye while in Basestation mode
Added support for displaying and saving the track of the Basestation itself
Added support for displaying the most recent update time for Basestation contacts
Fixed issue with Garmap Southern Africa Topo & Rec 2012.3 - NT not being displayed BaseCamp

No, even if the points were loaded with the trip your device may/will route the trip differently. When you load a "trip' into the device what you are really doing is just loading the waypoints and then the device calculates the trip. Basecamp/Mapsource use specified speeds for each type of road and you can modify the values in the programs. The devices use the actural speed limits. There may (probably are) other differenes in the progams in BaseCamp/MapSource and the devices. Note, even if the route were exactly the same when you transferred it, the first time you made a deviation driving and the device recalculated you would have the "different" route.

Cycling speeds in BaseCamp and device

I apologize, we still don't support that.

In older editions of MapSource, it used to be possible to set your own speeds for the various vehicle types. The Help pages still claim this to be possible, BTW, if you look. I'm pretty sure the setting I entered there also propagated down to my device (Nuvi 550; can't beat waterproof and extra battery for a full day of bicycle touring).

In BaseCamp today, you can enter the speeds but they don't "take" for some vehicle types, like the bicycles. Interestingly enough, they *do* take for some of the motor vehicles, which goes contrary to the notion that the calculation should be based on the assumption that we all drive at exactly the speed limit. And it doesn't seem like anything I enter in BaseCamp's speed settings makes it to the device.

I wish I'd had the foresight to save the temp.gpx file from back when my 550 was new and I'd first entered my speed preferences in MapSource. I'm willing to bet I could have read the XML to figure how to hack this manually from that. :p

Pretty sure that speeds, entered in MapSource or BaseCamp, don't get transferred to devices. To my knowledge they only make a difference in the PC software if at all. I suspect that devices use road speeds (from the map data) to calculate times.

PS: The last version of MapSource (v6.16.3) still allows you to enter "driving speeds".

MapSource also didn't honor the speeds for bicycle and pedestrian, nothing has changed in that regard.

If Basecamp has the facility to alter vehicle/travel speeds why can't we have it working for bicycles? Is this actually scheduled to be fixed?

It's a limitation of the underlying route algorithm, I hope this will get changed at some point, but I cannot say when.

I have to make a correction to a statement I made above as my experience has changed. Previously I stated "Also both MapSource and BaseCamp have never (in my experience) transferred the times and stop durations. They have to be entered manually after the route transfer."

I just purchased a new Nuvi 2597LMT and guess what, the times and stop durations were transferred from BaseCamp to the device. Also, all of the route waypoints (including shaping points) were transferred successfully. Hey, maybe there are some hidden improvements in the 2013 Nuvi's that no one is taking credit for. I am surprised FALAGAR did not correct my previous statements.

FALAGAR works in the "Desktop Apps" division of Garmin so I'm not surprised he isn't up on the capabilities of all devices. The "device" folks are separate--even from each other.

Sounds like the 2597 and it's brothers/sisters may be worth a look. I don't have the $$$ for one (and am happy with my 1490T) but I'll keep an eye on them.

I am retired now but I spent too many years in a big organization. Yep, the software guy and the hardware guy not coordinating and knowing what the other is doing sure is familiar.
