Searching in BaseCamp

What is the trick to search a address in base camp. I type for example 1234 south main street, town name, state name, zip code. And i have the map zoomed into the town and base camp gives me a list of address all over the places and it never finds the place i am looking for. The search does not work at all. I am using base camp version 4.1.2.
  • If your address is too exact it may not match what BC has in the database. Try 1234 main street, town name and see what happens. Course it's possibly the address isn't in the database of the map that you've selected?

Thanks for the response. I must of tried the address every way but with out the south in it. When I did that it found a north and south address.

So, I plugged in an address for a town hall and senior center that was holding a class I wanted to attend. Here is the address, try it!

135 School St., Walpole, MA 02032

    BaseCamp sends me to VT!!!!

After much hopping around and gnashing of teeth, I discovered that BaseCamp would only find the correct place if I put the address in this way:

135 School St., Walpole Twn, MA 02032. How am I supposed to know if I need Twn or not?

    upon further poking around...

If on the main menu along the top of BaseCamp, I choose FIND > FIND OPTIONS

Then, over on the right hand side of the screen, I select the radio button for Addresses:

And then, start to type the town name into the text box, a list of available towns will appear, and I can choose one by clicking on it:

With the town selected as shown above, if I enter the number and street in the top text box, I can then hit the search icon, and I will get the correct results!

    Correct result:

(apologies, it will not let me show 5 images). Suffice it to say it found the correct place.

So... to summarize, putting the full address in the search box fails to return the correct result, unless you know to put "TWN" in the text box after the town name. Not every town requires this. OTOH, if you build your search under find options > addresses, you can choose the town and see if it has (needs) a TWN or not, then add the rest of the street address above, and voila, good result.

How far from intuitive can they possibly make things? If every web-based mapping software like yahoo, google, etc., can find an address in one step, why can't Garmin? Or, am I missing something obvious that makes for a simple way to find a place?
  • I agree, it doesn't seem sensible to me that BC should require you to know that. Maybe Falagar can explain why?

Hopefully things will improve in 4.2

I'll see that we can fix this.

BaseCamp parses the search string for a city. Apparently it says Walpole Twn in the database and not Walpole for the address you are looking for and BaseCamp gets confused.

Using the location box to make sure BaseCamp is searching in the right city is a good idea.

That is what I was thinking too, Falagar. Seems like an artifact from navtech map data that needs a bit of parsing to work around. It may be an abbreviation for "town of" or similar. Maybe when map data is first read in when creating the db, Twn can be pulled into an optional field or something.

Often, the original towns in New England (and other parts of the country, for that matter) were established as "Townships", sometimes abbreviated "Twn" or "Twp". They were generally laid out as 6 mile by 6 mile square areas (or at least as a 36 square mile area) within a certain survey Township and Range.

    Basecamp v. 4.12 Mac

After searching for an item, for example the word "culvert" in "my collection", I get a list on the right side of the screen.
Two questions: 1. Is there some way to select or highlight those items, so I can export them as a gpx file? They dont seem to be highlighted in the "my collection" list on the left. I dont seem to be able to select more than one item at a time.
    2. How does change the search radius? Or can I search from the whole of "my collection" without using a search radius?

I have had good luck in finding addresses by using the "Find Addresses" under the Find Tab. Have your map centered on the town you want to find the address in. Then type in the address only. Do not put in the town name or state. Agree with the post above, you may have to omit the north, south, etc from the street name. You will get a list of addresses to chose from. Some are weird and I can see not reason for them to show on the list.

Alas, not true in most of the eastern U.S. Absolutely true in the western U.S.
