Using Basecamp with Foretrex 401

I understand that since I have a rudimentary device I can't upload detail to the 401.

What I don't understand is why I can't access more detailed maps (i.e., topo) on Basecamp to plan trips or review them. Is there something I am not seeing? As it is, the base map is so rudimentary (and because of simplified graphics completely inaccurate) it is basically useless. The whole point of a trail-oriented GPS is to use it for travel in the backcountry, which requires elevation and accuracy.

Also, the "Report a Map Error" option does not have "Basecamp" in the devices or map list.

Basecamp comes with just a rudimentary map. It'll read maps off devices, but that will be of no help to you.

What you need is a third party map that Basecamp can use or buy a Garmin map. Various free maps are published, some better than others. Some will work with Basecamp, some won't. Try here for starters

Incidentally there are also many websites that allow you to create/visualise routes, so you don't need to solely concentrate on BC.

I use OziExplorer with freely available maps to plot waypoints and routes that I then download to my Foretrex devices (401 and 601). Highly recommended.
