Etrex Legend C Compatible with Basecamp?

Hello,

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit.

As we're just coming out of winter, I haven't used my Etrex in several months. In fact, I don't remember exactly the last time I downloaded maps to the device but it would have been using Mapsource. I just tried downloading maps today with Mapsource and ran into troubles. Mapsource isn't recognizing my device. I'm not sure if software I installed since the last successful download could have destabilized Mapsource.

I discovered that Basecamp is the successor to Mapsource so I tried installing it. I'm also having some troube with Basecamp and my old etrex. I see the etrex in the devices folder but when I try to install maps Mapinstall is not able to find my device (seem's strange that Basecamp can find it but Mapinstall cannot.)

I checked to see if Basecamp is compatible with the etrex Legend C. According to the information from Garmin, etrex Legend is not compatible but the etrex Legend C came out after so I'm not certain if they mean all etrex Legend series or not.

Would anyone know why Mapinstall is not able to detect my device?

I used to have a Legend C myself, many years ago. :) I believe it connects to the computer via a USB interface, doesn't it? If so, then it should be compatible with Basecamp. Basecamp is not compatible with devices that have serial interfaces, such as some of the older/cheaper eTrex series.

Beyond that, I'm not sure what might be going on, sorry.

Yes, BaseCamp should work with any of the Etrex models which use a USB interface.

It sounds like you need to install the Garmin USB drivers. I thought these are usually installed automatically with BaseCamp or MapSource, but it seems like they are messed up somehow on your PC. You can download the latest version here: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=591

Very likely as Windows seems to "lose" the Garmin USB drivers quite often. No idea why but it happens all the time to me.

I actually did reinstall the Garmin USB drivers as part of troubleshooting my Mapsource problem. I just did it again but no luck. The only thing I can think of that might have destabilized everything is installing Samsung Kies for my tablet. I'm wondering if it messed with how the GPS drivers are set up.

If you're trying to load maps vs transfer wayoints/routes etc you need to put your unit into mass-storage mode.

On older models entering mass-storage mode allows you to access the microSD card by turning the GPS into a very expensive card reader. You're better off removing the card from your unit and putting it in a card reader to transfer maps.

When I go to "Devices and Printers" in Windows it shows the GPS as "Garmin USB GPS" with the driver version 2.3.1.0 and the date 19/04/2012. So the driver does appear to be there but I still have the same problem loading maps.

You need to use mass storage mode to transfer maps!!!!

The Legend C does not have a memory card, and it does not work in USB mass storage mode. You have to use the standard USB Garmin mode to load maps.

I just de-installed Samsung Kies and another software called Doubletwist and now both Mapsource and Basecamp are working as expected. I'm now suspecting a conflict between these software as the origin of the problem.
