GPSMAP 60CS screen cluttered by route point labels

I have the issue described in this old thread.

I've started using MapSource 6 years ago and moved to BaseCamp about a year ago. This same issue occurred with MapSource--and it was an issue that would auto-resolve and then reappear depending on the latest release. With the last version of MapSource I used, the routes I created would have big blue flags for every point, so when loaded on my little handheld 60CS, the screen was cluttered with blue flags. I had gotten into the habit of:

  • Export route as GPX file
  • Use text editor to repace "Flag, Blue" with "Waypoint"
  • Import back into MapSource

Apparently "Waypoint" was a small dot icon instead of a big blue flag.

The problem I'm having now is that when I load the route--say with 248 points--every point displays it's name label on my little 60CS screen. In MapSource, there was a way to select all points and indicate to only show the icon--not that it always worked! I can't find this option for route points in BaseCamp.

I sure hope someone knows how I can solve this. It's unclear to me if it's an issue in BaseCamp or a matter of setting in my 60CS unit. I've searched all the menus for anything related with no change.

Thanks!
  • Did you try BC or just Mapsource? I'll be home later so I'll try copying the routes across and try :)

I don't remember exactly what I did. What day is it? :p

I do know that the ViaSymbol registry setting was different on all my machines so I made them all the same and recalculated routes. I deleted an existing route in my 1490 and resent it (from MS not BC) and the symbol changed to a small green dot (City, Small).

The simplest way to check is to look at the GPX file BC (or MS) puts on your unit. If its not what it should be (e.g. City, Small in my case) something got done wrong.
  • It works sending it to the GPS ... Just displays the same in BC.

    BTW it's Tuesday.

Pretty sure it updated in MS.

My PC says its Tues too so it must be ;)
  • Can't get it to update existing routes in Mapsource either. although new routes now show the City, Small symbol. No matter, I've used neodraigs 'blank symbol' (thanks neodraig :)) on my Etrex which has solved the problem, I can cope with my existing routes in BC still showing as blue flags.

Well it'd be nice to know if City, Small works as a route via symbol on the eTrex models. If it doesn't I'd say that's a bug.

I know it does work on my units (and the 60CS).

The custom waypoint symbol work-around should work on any unit where you can load and name the symbol. That is not possible on nuvi's (they don't support custom symbols) or older models where you use xImage to load custom symbols.
  • Well I can answer that ... it certainly does work on the Etrex 20 I have, no problem as I said getting it to display on the GPS :)

(It's Tuesday in case you've forgotten already)

"This must be Tuesday," said Arthur musing to himself, sinking low over his beer, "I never could get the hang of Tuesdays."

Ok ok, he really said Thursdays :p

I'm trying to implement this on a Garmin GPS62s/Basecamp and can't get it to work, so would be grateful for some further assistance.

As with most of the entries on this thread I'm trying to change the dreaded blue pin to something a little more discreet. I've edited the registry on my PC and changed the via symbol entry from 12 to 45, rebooted the PC, checked the reg entry was still 45 and created a route in Basecamp. The green dots are visible but when I exported it it was still blue pins on the 62s.

I can see the symbols available in Basecamp but I can't try Neodraig's method as I don't understand how to find out which symbols are available on the 62 - clearly not all otherwise I assume the green dot would have shown on the device.

    Thanks
  • What worked for me was creating custom symbols for my GPS that replaced the blue pin/flag. I chose a transparent symbol. Now no more blue flags or pins.
