GPSMAP 60CS screen cluttered by route point labels

I have the issue described in this old thread.

I've started using MapSource 6 years ago and moved to BaseCamp about a year ago. This same issue occurred with MapSource--and it was an issue that would auto-resolve and then reappear depending on the latest release. With the last version of MapSource I used, the routes I created would have big blue flags for every point, so when loaded on my little handheld 60CS, the screen was cluttered with blue flags. I had gotten into the habit of:

  • Export route as GPX file
  • Use text editor to repace "Flag, Blue" with "Waypoint"
  • Import back into MapSource

Apparently "Waypoint" was a small dot icon instead of a big blue flag.

The problem I'm having now is that when I load the route--say with 248 points--every point displays it's name label on my little 60CS screen. In MapSource, there was a way to select all points and indicate to only show the icon--not that it always worked! I can't find this option for route points in BaseCamp.

I sure hope someone knows how I can solve this. It's unclear to me if it's an issue in BaseCamp or a matter of setting in my 60CS unit. I've searched all the menus for anything related with no change.

Thanks!

...I don't understand how to find out which symbols are available on the 62...

Well someone has done the work for you (found with a 5 sec Google search)

Waypoint symbols on a Garmin 62s with Software Version 4.80

and City (Small) is in the list. Did you recalculate the route in BC and resend it to your 62S after changing the registry?

Thanks for the quick replies and sorry, you are absolutely right I should have googled it more before asking questions.

I did recalculate the route, and produced a new route, when I used rededit for the first time and I've tried it again and it still only changes the icon in Basecamp, the device continues to display the blue pins. Perhaps in the newer devices the use of the blue pin is set in the device but I've found the list of hex values for the symbols on this site and I'll have a go and see if I can find one that does transfer over to the device. Failing that then I'll try the transparent symbol.

    Again many thanks.
  • The 62 series ignores symbols sent in routes and uses a blue pin. I assume this is the default via point on the device. To the best of my knowledge, there is no way to set the default symbols for waypoints or via points on a 62. You should probably go straight to trying the transparent symbol.

Thanks for your help. I took the suggestion of Sussamb and BTLAAKE and went straight for the transparent icon and that works brilliantly.

  • I know my blue flag issue is only regarding waypoints and tracks, but here is my discussion with Garmin:

    Hello Ric,

Yes, when the waypoints are transferred with BaseCamp to the device, the waypoint symbols show on the device with the same symbols as long as custom waypoint symbols are not used in BaseCamp.

How about while using any other map program?  BaseCamp?

    Hello Ric,

I'm sorry, waypoint symbols will not transfer when waypoints are imported to the device from MapSource.

I have a GPD file (Waypoints and 9 Tracks) to load to my unit via Mapsource. Of the 644 waypoint symbols I have 1 green flag, 1 red flag, 3 blue flags, and the remaining waypoints are small black dots. However when I load the GPD to the unit, all waypoints end up with blue flags. Is there any way to have the waypoint symbols on the unit, just as I have them in Mapsource?  Device:  GPSMAP® 76Cx
