Withdrawal of European map version 2013.40

Please please tell me that what I've just read on another forum (Zumo) isn't true. Here's part of the post in question:-

I contacted Garmin who have told me the new Europe 2013.40 maps updates have been withdrawn as the maps are faulty and cannot be trusted
  • Here in the UK there was a download available yesterday; 2013.40U which was described on the mapupdater as 'reinstall' as opposed to an update.

Actually it seems to be called NTU 2013.40, as opposed to NT 2013.40.

I am also in the UK and have the new Europe 2013.40. After reading this thread I attempted to find an update but all I got was that my map was up-to-date.

Today whilst following a route and wanting to extend it to Harwich, it stopped at 21% in it's route calculation and reported that it could not calculate.

Using Harwich GBR, rather than Harwich town, it was able to calculate.

Seems I must look again for an update because I have a lot of miles to do soon.

It was good to follow this post and find out why, when I tried to download Europe maps, the Garmin site said not available until May 1 even though it was released in March.

But the bad news is that I was planning to take my nuvi 2460LMT (purchased in USA with all North America included) to UK/Continent on April 8th. I'm going to be doing a lot of driving from April 9 to May 13 and was depending on having my nuvi beside me!

Given the timing I won't be able to receive a micro SD card version from another site such as Amazon in time (I'm presently in Mexico) even if I could find it, so was relying on being able to download from Garmin just before departing. Does anyone have any suggestions for how I might get hold of the previous version by download? I have written to Garmin Support but given that it's Easter, not really expecting a reply in time to help.

In the meantime I am trying a download from http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/All_in_one_Garmin_Map#European_Countries_and_Regions but have no idea (when the download completes which still has 4 hours to run) whether it will work or be useful.

Any suggestions or thoughts would be most welcome!

    Cheers, Roger

I will also be doing 2000 miles in the EU but in May so hopefully Garmins map update will be out.

However, either way if you get time please let us know how you get on with installing and use of the open map.

Have an enjoyable and safe journey.
  • Most probably bugs in City Navigator Europe are limited to the area of Netherlands. There appear some info in Dutch, maybe Garmin Service is more helpful for local users:

I will be traveling in the Netherlands. I also found a problem in the UK recently. (Posted previously)

    The link you provide says:

The new version, 2013.41, will be available for download from 17 April 2013.

To go back to the previous version: see http://www.mrgps.nl/downgrade-city-navigator-2013-3/

However if you would prefer to go back to 2013.3 you can. Send an email to [email protected], with the subject line 'downgrade 2013.3' and specified in the notice the serial number of your device. You receive asap via email instructions on how to act.

I am wondering if there is a similar service for the UK? Maybe [email protected]

Sent an email to see if it bounces. (and it did!!!)

EDIT: I just found that if I go to Garmins 'Manage My Maps' web page I can download any version back to 2013.10

My map appears to work as it should until I get to an area where it does not.

For example I gave it a destination yesterday and started out. After a couple of miles it told me to turn round and appeared to be taking me back to my starting point.I knew most of the route so ignored it. It continued doing this for 80% of the route then took me along the correct route to my destination. Previously it had failed to calculate a particular route but otherwise worked correctly. It is as if there are 'blind spots' which cause the map trouble.

    Reply from Garmin states:

Garmin has recently been made aware of an issue involving map data present on its Personal Navigation Devices (PNDs) that may cause the PNDs with certain map versions to indicate the direction of travel incorrectly on a very low percentage of road segments only in the Netherlands. Garmin has determined that certain roadway segments within the Netherlands have incorrect one way assignments, resulting in travel guidance against the flow of traffic for short portions of certain calculated routes. This issue affects primarily roundabouts or non-controlled access roads.

Garmin is currently working on a database update that will correct this issue and expects to have the update available in late April 2013.

    No mention of the UK.

I too got that email yesterday. It would appear that they are actively contacting everyone with a registered device that uses these maps.

I'm pleased to hear it will be late April as that will still be within my 90 free update period and I won't have to fight with Garmin about it being outside the time period.

    NT Europe 2013.41

I was told this when I talked to Garmin,"Garmin is currently investigating a potential issue with 2013.40 and has decided to remove the update and downloadable content until that investigation is completed. We will endeavor to make a new version of maps available as soon as possible; current estimated availability is May the 1st. You will not be able to pre-order this version of mapping prior to May 1st. "

The latest I've heard is a release of NT Europe 2013.41 on April 17th. But don't hold me to it! The 'problems' seem to be limited to the Netherlands only.
  • Not sure about the date but the reason is explained in the posts above.
