BC route on my Nuvi 3710.

Hi everyone, new member in need of help.

I've recently bought a Nuvi 3710, it was the best i could find for the money i had, and more importantly it supports MS.
However, it doesn't come with MS, after phoning garmin and being told MS is out dated and BC is the software to use, i downloaded BC and started to use it to plan routes. A bit tricky to begin with but i got the hang of it.

Here is my problem, when I transfer the routes to my device (more messing about) and try to travel the routes it asks me to select a destination and then takes me the quickest way to that destination rather then the route i want to travel.

Am i doing something wrong??

Is there somewhere i can download MS as i no longer have a disc or the software saved an my PC

Any help is appreciated

Carl

See, this is the problem. The 37x0 series doesn't really "support" mapsource route planning. You can create a route in Mapsource and send it to the 3710. But the 3710 will then convert it to a "trip". And, as you've learned, trips behave differently from routes. "It is what it is"... that's the way Trip Planner works and there isn't anything you can do about it. :(

Note that when navigating a trip you must select the first waypoint. If you select the last it will do what your seeing ... And take you directly to the last point.

If I select the first waypoint, will it travel the route that was on BC or take its own route to that waypoint, and what happens once i reach that way point, it stopped navigating earlier as though i had reached my destination. do i select the next way point and so on?
  • It'll still take it's own route, but if you use the same maps in Basecamp and on your GPS, and your avoidances are the same, in most cases it should match the Basecamp route. AFAIK nuvis that use trips will automatically switch to the next part of the trip, provided you reach the end of the previous part.

My apologies for being a complete NOOB. anyone know where/if theres a list of Nuvis that DON'T support trip planner? I guessed a newer sat nav would work better than the old quest i used to had. After reading a few threads on here I agree with most, that Garmin appear to have taken a step back in technology. I wish I had read reviews before buying a 3710. I hate TomTom because you can't custom make a route, it now appears Garmin is the same.

Well a few of us have the 1490T (5" screen) and at least one a 765T (4.3" screen). That said you won't find those in a store. Amazon has the 1490T.

If you look at models on Garmin's website anything with "routes" < 100 has routes and anything >= 100 has trips.

For example here is the specifications page for your 3710.

    Routes: 100

    Translation: Trip planner

    Now the 1490T

    Routes: 10

    ==> Routes

    This site might help.

    http://gpstracklog.com/compare/garmin-nuvi-comparison-chart

Look at the "multi-point routing column". That said the chart only seems to show "current" models although the 1450--a lesser version of the 1490T is there. Also double-check the specs on Garmin's site before purchasing.

You mentioned something that I've been harping on for quite some time. Only a very small percentage of those who acquire Garmin equipment care about which devices work easily with MapSource and BaseCamp, so we have to pick it with the chickens when it comes time to figure out which ones work best if you care about planning travel on a real computer before leaving home.

I also have a Quest that still does many things better than either of my two Nuvis but, alas, I can't get updated NA maps or any European maps for my Quest. Plus which, the Nuvis have much more sensitive receivers; I lost the signal a lot with my Quest.

So, here we are. Hope it works out okay for you.

This might also help: Which nuvi's support route import from Basecamp/Mapsource?

It's a shame Garmin didn't, on their unit specification pages, say

    Routes: 0
    Trips: 100

    Routes: 10
    Trips: 0

to distinguish. I guess they didn't do so to increase sales.

Calling the Trip Planner "Routes" is disingenuous IMO.
