I *like* Express!

Yes, I really do. I installed it today and immediately found it to be useful.

For those who have had their introduction to Express as a map update tool, I can understand why a negative view. But it's so much more than that.

I have three Nuvis and an eTrex to manage. Express helps me do that rather nicely.

I have a mish-mash of waypoints and favorites scattered around on the four devices. I had planned to spend a big chunk of the day cleaning up the mess and getting it all into one consolidated list. When it came time to get the list onto the various devices, Express came in really handy.

After transferring the list from Mapsource onto one of the Nuvis I used Express to backup that Nuvi. Then I used Express to transfer from that backup onto the other two Nuvis. Then I backed them up, too.

For anyone who has multiple Garmin devices to manage, Express is really a slick tool.

Falagar, I didn't know where else to put this because there isn't a section for Express and it's way more than just a map installation tool. I have a couple of suggestions for improvements and I hope you will pass them along to the appropriate people.

1. As many people have already noted, it really needs two additions to control map installation:

a. Option to install to PC and device, device only, PC only, just like MapUpdater.
b. Option to install to SD card rather than main memory.

2. In Restore function, allow option to select only those elements you want to restore, eg. give us a list of restorable items (Favorites, Routes, Tracks, Voices, Vehicles, etc.) and let us check off just the ones we want to restore.

Let me be really clear here; I don't want the ability to restore individual waypoints or individual routes or individual tracks. I do want the ability to restore waypoints/Favorites without also restoring a bunch of old tracks or routes or Etc.

3. In Transfer function, allow the same option as Restore, eg. list Favorites, Routes, Tracks, Voices, Vehicles, etc. and let us check off only those we want to transfer.

It would be nice if we could find out what's in each backup, at least at the time the backup is made, eg. Favorites were backed up successfully, no Routes, Tracks backed up successfully, Voices backed up.... , Etc. Right now I have no idea exactly what gets backed up.

Do the files in the various folders in main memory get backed up, too? Eg. DeviceInfo.xml, GPX files, POI files, Voice files, Vehicle files, Track files? It would be really helpful to know what information is in a backup.

Those enhancements would make a good tool great.

    Hi All,
From (uk Nr Liverpool) at present I'm having the same issues with Garmin Zumo 660. I (bought) and uploaded new Euromaps 2013 on advice from Garmin support who said that I could have detailed Euromap 2013 map (EU map) installed and available to view and work on my Mac when these were uploaded. Of course Garmin Express kicked in straight away and did not give me a choice, G Exp just went straight and downloaded to Garmin unit. Garmin Express definitely did not give me any choice or where maps might get installed only the Garmin 660. This meant that if the Garmin was being used (by other family member elsewhere) I could not plan any routes (for rides in North Wales) unless the unit was also plugged in to my Mac at the same time. Also the Garmin Zumo 660 seemed a bit confused with the original 2011 EU map 3d and 2d and the new EU 2013 map. both2d and 3d that were now both installed.( I use Basecamp BTW). I think the Garmin was reading some older routes of the old 2011 map but somewhere getting it's "wires crossed." I could have lived with that bit apart from no EU map on Mac comp without Garmin also plugged.

I contacted GC Services in (Uk Southampton) who stated I need to use Garmin Map updater v.4.4.2 to get the EU map appear on my Mac (Why they did not tell me this initially before I used Garmin Express is a mystery!) and to carry out a reload of the 2013 EU map So having been emailed the Garmin map updater I opened it got it started but it only got as far as as saying not enough space on Garmin and froze.

Out of frustration and stupidity ( I know I should not have done this but I've been emailing Garmin C services for about three weeks who did not seem to be able to give a straight answer) I copied all the files off the Garmin with a crazy idea I would do a reload of the software. To try to create some space. However I've now put most files back on the Garmin and have my 2011 map both 2d and 3d running.

Anyway a question I have if anyone can help me please or offer advice is, having more or less uploaded the software back on the Garmin apart from the 2013 EU map, I'm stuck on loading the voice file that says "can't be copied," the JVC file that also say the same "Can't be copied" and the Gmapprom.img which also says the same "can't be copied."

I've got an idea the Garmin 660 unit might be thinking some of these files are still loaded but I don't know. I think but I dont know the Gmapprom.img is some sort of map or file installer. I also need to upload the EU 2013 map. I have a 4GB SD card that is (currently) empty. It did have gmapsup1.img and a GPX file (I still have)

It would be great if one of kind people could help. I'm not a techy type but I've also figured out the Garmin needs to be (switched on and off) or rebooted for the software to settle down again.

I've tried to keep a clear head over this but it is tricky. (I drive a stick shift or manual as they are called here.)

"a. Option to install to PC and device, device only, PC only, just like MapUpdater."

I used Express once. But the above quote is why I won't use it again until they provide that feature. I see no value in updating the map in my Garmins without also updating the maps in the mapping software. I have no desire to create a route on a map that may not match what's in the GPS. I've had too many problems with recalculation wanting me to make a turn because the point I chose on the mapping software map is not on the road in the new map in the GPS. To me, not having that feature was a major oversight in application design.
