Backup To Removable USB Jump Drive

On my laptop running Win XP Home Vers 2002 SP3 and on my desktop Windows 8 machine, I can not directly backup my BaseCamp data to a removable USB jump drive. The message I'm getting is "The Backup file 'K:\BaseCamp 2013-02-12.Backup' is invalid or read-only.

If I backup the BaseCamp data file to my Desktop instead, it works and I'm able to then copy the .backup file to my removable jump drive and then restore from it to either my laptop or home PC.

I wish to transfer my current BaseCamp data back and forth between my laptop so I can take it on the road with me when I go off-roading.
  • I've observed the same thing. I can successfully backup to a second physical hard drive in the computer but receive the same message when attempting to do so to either an external hard drive or USB flash drive. Kind of a pain to backup first to a hard drive and then copy to external media. Once the backup file in on the flash drive or external hard drive, it works fine to "restore" to my laptop.

The desktop is Windows 7 32 bit and the laptop is Windows 8 64 bit. The laptop producess the same behaviour as the desktop.

  • Not familiar with Basecamp but if you can choose the backup destination, have a look at http://dropbox.com

In my case, and that may also be true of the OP, I just want to copy the file to the laptop for use without having to have internet access. Also, the backup file is more than 9 GB which makes upload/download impractical unless I happen to have an extraordinary internet connection.
  • Tried another backup to a removable 16 GB USB drive. This time I created a folder called backup on the USB drive and set that as the destination. It appeared to go well until something past the halfway point when it stopped and displayed the following message: "An exception occurred during the backup process".

Is the flash drive formatted as FAT32? If so, I believe that has a limit of 4GB for any individual file, which sort of matches your report of an error about halfway through a 9GB backup. :D

    Ahhhh! yes it is.
Thanks! I'll re-format it NTFS or maybe exFAT and try again.

  • I re-formatted the 16 GB USB drive to NTFS and sucessfully backed up BC to that device! I did discover however, the reason for the OP's error message. The backup destination must be in a folder, NOT the root directory of the drive. After a failed attempt to the root directory I created a folder called backup and tried again with success!
