Basecamp, reversing route

OK trying to get my old head around basecamp as been used to mapsourse for many years.

driving from UK to Spain in a few weeks. have written route in basecamp and downloaded to new 2495 LMT, ao far so good.. copied route and changed the name to create identical return journey. BUT when I invert either of the routes in basecamp they botn change direction

even though I have 2 routes in 2495 (out and back) they are in identical directions (out)

can anyone help please.....
  • It's that word 'copy' which is worrying. Did you do what I suggested on the other forum and selected 'Duplicate'? If so when you reverse one the other shouldn't also reverse. This thread https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?34984-Alter-Route-but-retain-original also discusses this and may help you.

    can confirm running 4.1.1.

No I did as you said and just tried again (deleting duplicated route first) duplicated again (sorry not copied)

route was created by dragging the route pen on map. there are only 2 waypoints Calais and Benidorm. I have read the thread you posted and seems problem identical to mine....

so 2 duplicated routes >1 renamed for return route > click twice with arrow tool on route > route box opens > hit invert > both routes change and are still identical. (whether I rename or not same thing happens)

have tried this now many times.......
  • Just done it on my PC and got 2 different routes. Note that you also need to select YES when asked if you want to duplicate the waypoints. See here:

Have never been asked anything about waypoints?

the test section file to right of your screen shot also unfamiliar:confused:
  • The test section simply shows the folder I created into which I could put Calais, Benidorm and the route.

Try this. Create 2 waypoints in Basecamp, Calais and Benidorm. Highlight them both, right click and select Create route from selected waypoints. You should now have the two waypoints and the route between them. Now right click the route and select Duplicate. You should get the message about duplicating waypoints. Select yes.

Now you should have 2 routes and 4 waypoints as per my example. Right click one of the routes, select Advanced then invert. Now your 2 routes should be different, one from Calais to Benidorm, the other from Benidorm to Calais.

Note that by using the route tool to create the route you won't be asked about duplicating waypoints (as BC doesn't create waypoints when you use the route tool). But even when I create the route that way and then invert one I still get 2 different routes, one Calais to Benidorm, the other Benidorm to Calais.

Yes but if I do that it will be a random garmin generated route. My route is specific....

This is bonkers...it should not be so difficult to reverse a written route. To be honest it would have been quicker to write a reverse route from scratch!lol but we are talking principals here!lol these program's/devices are supposed to improve the experience but they seem to be making it more technical and less intuitive ........

have had garmin since 2000 and only thing that has improved is the price
  • Well you can do 2 things (bear in mind my routes were just examples to show one way of how it can be done).

Insert additional viapoints using the insert tool (I do this all the time to force routes the way I want) or follow the advice in my last paragraph.

By the sounds of it that's what you've done to create your route, but looking at your jpg you only show one route there, you should have 2 ... your original and the duplicated one. Once you have 2 unique routes you will be able to select Advanced, Invert and BCwill do it for you :)

(If you want attach your route and I'll invert it for you)

    I had removed the duplicate...

OK duplicated again. this time "advance" lit up under Edit on tool bar(it does not always?)

previously I reversed from double click on route with arrow > box opens with all details and inverted from their.

No it seems whatever I do both change. have tried renaming before inverting...renaming after...no difference

how do I copy the route on to here please

I followed a you tube video for writing route, as unlike Mapsource if you select another tool > then go back to route tool the route stops. so this chap shows how to write route using pen/mouse and direction keys on PC. its very quick....

  • You can actually continue a route, although using the arrow keys is also a way I use. To extend a route simply choose the insert tool and hover over the end point until a circle appears, then click and you can continue the route. See here:

I don't understand what you're doing wrong. If I duplicate a route (whichever method I use) then click on one and invert it, it doesn't change the original. To send me the route just use BC to save the route to your PC. To do that ensure the route is selected, then go to top left and select File, Export. Then PM it to me, or attach it to your post (just scroll down while composing your post and you'll see a button that says attachments).
