What is the routine to update your maps now..

I have lifetime updates for my Garmin 465t. I am using BC 4.1.1. I have been reading about updating the maps for the Garmin. My present map is City Navigator North America NT 2013.3.

I normally connect my 465t to my computer, go to the Garmin website and log in. At the MyDashboard I can normally download the newest map to my computer and to my GPS at the same time. There was an options selection to select that I want to put the map on both my computer and GPS. I do have a 4gig SD card in my 465t.

I don't remember what it was that downloaded my earlier new maps, Garmin Express, MapInstall, or Garminmapupdater.

I am just starting to set out on our yearly travels in our RV and need my GPS to operate properly. I am runing MS Windows 7 on my laptop.

If I log into the Garmin website and download the 2013.4 new maps what will be used to download and install the new maps and will I still have the option to place the maps on both the computer and GPS or should I do it a different way?

I also have a limited band width using my air cards and will have to go to some place that has high speed internet access, so I can only do this once...

I also can download a 2012-12-23 map to my computer until Mar. 12th. I want to download it to my computer so I can use MapSource if necessary. I tried earlier and Garmin Express started and then changed to download 2013.4 which I don't want right now. Any advice on this?

Thank you
BC
  • You can download an older map by logging into myGarmin and then myMaps, but that then forces you to use Garmin Express which is very buggy, you will find numerous threads on this if you search this site. Express also has no option at the moment to allow you to select to download to GPS and your PC. However I understand that Express will download maps to your PC if it believes you don't have sufficient room on your GPS. I've never tried this but someone else posted that if you temporarily rename your map file to gmapprom.xyz rather than gmapprom.img this fools Express which then sends the map to your PC. You could give that a try.

Your best bet for the latest map is to use GarminMapUpdater, but I don't know if there is anyway to select older maps using it  It does however allow you to install to both GPS and PC.

As for using maps with Mapsource, there are now problems being reported with the latest maps, see this thread https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?34842-MapSource-vs-BaseCamp/page6
