Alter Route but retain original?

I have recently prepared a set of routes for a specific trip in the USA. I now want to use these routes as the basis for slightly different routes. I have copied the routes and saved them in a new list and folder, but find that when I alter them in the new lists they are altered in the original folder and list as well. How do I get round this?
  • I don't get any prompts either on 4.1.1 (Falagar ... should I?)

But I definitely get a new route that I can change without changing the original. As it's not something I do often I can't confirm if that's how it worked in 4.0.5. Your best bet may be to install 4.1.1

You get the prompt only if the route that you are duplicating contains waypoints. If you do not duplicate waypoints when prompted and subsequently change a waypoints (e.g. rename or move) in the new route that will affect the old route and everywhere else that the waypoint is used.
  • Yep, got it now, they have to be specific waypoints. A lot of my routes just have vias and I then don't get that prompt. Creating a route with waypoints and then duplicating it gave me the prompt :)

Doesn't help the OP though :(
  • The option to duplicate waypoints was added to Basecamp some time ago. If the OP has a backlevel Basecamp AND has waypoints in the duplicated route there will be problems with the original route when waypoints are changed. Make sure that Basecamp is on 4.1.1 and make sure to duplicate waypoints when prompted. I trust that will fix the problem.

I haven't updated BC to 4.1.1. as yet as I had an issue with it last time I tried. I can't believe that this issue is unique to 4.0.5 and was fixed in 4.1.1. however, so really I should be able to get it sorted anyway.

I notice that although my routes are saved in a named list within a folder that all of the information, in all of my folders and files can also be seen when I click on "My Collection" - is this right? and does it make any difference?

I have checked the duplicate procedure with a route that contains waypoints and I certainly don't get a message that says "duplicate waypoints" when I have clicked duplicate. I then change the name of the duplicate list and proceed to alter the route to my new requirements. Once I have done this all the changes are also made in the original.

Should I be saving in a different location?

Frustrating to say the least as I have a number of Route 66's to prepare and I want to be able to duplicate my original and make changes without changing the original itself.
  • Seeing everything when you click on My Collection is normal. It also doesn't matter where you have the duplicate route, even in the same folder/file I can change the duplicate without affecting the original. I think you must have a problem with your BC, if I were you I'd either re-install 4.0.5 or better still have another go at 4.1.1

OK - thanks for the advice. I think I will make a new system restore point before installing 4.1.1. At least then I won't lose anything if things go pear shaped again!

The prompt was added in 4.0.1, so you should see it.

As others pointed out, you will only get the prompt if the route contains actual waypoints, not just via-points. Real waypoints show up in My Collection, via-points do not.

There is no way to disable that prompt that I am aware of.

When you select to duplicate a route and agree to also duplicate the waypoints, where do the "new" route and all those "new" waypoints get created?

    ...ken...
