I created a circular walk as a route by rubber banding. There was an error in it so I deleted it, created another and tried to give it the same name as previously. I am presented with the following message, however: "This route name has already been used. Please enter a unique route name.". Did I, perhaps, not remove the original route correctly and is there something I might do now to allow the name I wish to use?

Huh! I find I have nine routes and parts of routes in my Unlisted Data folder. How did they get there!? And, yes, my original route is there, too. Many thanks.
Bob
They got there because you all you did was "remove from (this) list" instead of "delete from all lists" (or whatever the exact words are).
If you're familiar with shortcuts in Windows then you know that deleting a shortcut does not remove a program only the shortcut (and there can be more than one of them).
In BaseCamp, there is only one database. Folders and lists are used to organize objects in the database. Think of a card catalog in library. The card catalog doesn’t contain books, it tells you where to find the book. Basically that is what a list does. It doesn’t contain all the information for a waypoint, it tells the program where to find the information.
Because it operates this way, you can organize a single object on multiple lists, just like a single book in a library can be found by Author, Title or Subject. This requires two types of deletion. Type one only removes the object's name from a list, type two removes the object from the database (and all lists). The Delete key only removes the object from the list. Shift-Delete removes it from the database and as a result all lists.
As an alternative, you can right click on an object and a pop-up menu will appear. There you will see the options Delete (deletes from database) and Remove from “list name”.
Any object in the database that does not appear on any list will show up in the unlisted data folder. My Collections will show all objects in the database.

I thank you for your replies. I understand much more now following numerous visits to BaseCamp over several days and reading what users have written about the software. My surprise at what was in the Unlisted Data folder was that it contained tracks that had so many copies of themselves and routes that were mere sections of routes I wished to plot or had plotted. I can only guess that I had somehow created these quite without intention and out of ignorance. I am pleased to write that I have now cleared out everything. I shall create a new List or List Folder in future before importing or creating anything.
I have read so many criticisms of BaseCamp, yet I am rather beginning to enjoy it.
