MapSource vs BaseCamp

This might be the same as "Fighting City Hall" but for the user of Garmin GPS for about 11 years and the MapSource Product, BaseCamp is not an equal replacement. First of all, MapSource is more intuitive and easier to navigate on my pc, which I do all of my route planning. Second, I am able to store separate files. I do one each for long rides, say 2 weeks / 3000 miles / 250 waypoints. I do a separate file for each year for shorter trips of a few hours, thus I have 2012, 2011, 2010 ... files. As for the Route Properties -> Directions screen, I can cut and paste it directly into Excel so that I can use this data to develope route itineraries. Instead of a row and column structure that is used with MapSource, BaseCamp pastes all the data in one column that is very difficult to work with, taking a lot of time to spread it back out into different columns. I use the Categories feature quite a bit to diferentiate things such as food, fuel, attractions, Harley Dealers, route plan, etc. I cannot do this with BaseCamp. Everything about the data in BaseCamp is difficult to work with. I am sorry but unless Garmin can restore features and make it easier to find your way around and save files BaseCamp is a looser in my mind.

You suggest I continue to use Mapsource. How do I do that since it doesn't find the GPS?

Most newer model nuvi's operate in MTP mode when connected to a computer. Try putting your 2455 into mas-storage mode instead. I think, but am not 100% sure, that MapSource will "see it" then.

    https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?31545-Mapsource-does-not-connect-to-GPS-anymore&p=166466&highlight=mass+storage+mode#post166466

The other issue you'll have is that the 2455 is a "Trip Planner" model. Any routes you create in MapSource or BaseCamp will be converted to trips by the unit.
  • Mapsource is still available should you wish to use it. Basecamp takes a while to get used to, particularly if you're used to Mapsource, but once you do you'll find it's as easy to use as Mapsource and can do much more ... Should you need the additional features it offers.
  • I was convinced by the support staff that Basecamp was the new, wonderful replacement for Mapsource. Sorry Garmin, but I feel like I have been misled, and you have let me down with an inferior product, dressed up as an upgrade.

I hope you know, that after installing BaseCamp you can install Mapsource update and use both programs. Mapsource is here:

I don't like BC either but some people on the club are using it as some GPSses are not supported by MS.
So I've BC on my PC and have to do some tests to answer questions.
I also had the problem BC remembering everything.
I've found a solution. It maybe crude but it's effective, just delete the database before starting BC.
On my win7 x64 system I've made a .bat file containing the following code:
    del C:\Users\{insert your username here}\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\BaseCamp\Database\4.2\AllData.gdb
    del C:\Users\{insert your username here}\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\BaseCamp\Database\4.2\AllData.gdb.bak
    del C:\Users\{insert your username here}\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\BaseCamp\Database\4.2\FolderData.gfi
    del C:\Users\{insert your username here}\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\BaseCamp\Database\4.2\FolderData.gfi.bak
start "BaseCamp As MapSource" "C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\BaseCamp\BaseCamp.exe" /B

Beware you're trying this at your own risk!
When there is a BC update, check if the database is still in the same folder, adjust the code if neccesery.
To be creative, you can make several batch files, moving the database instead of deleting.

I have a Streetpilot 2720, I live full time in an RV. For years, I have use MS on my computer to plan my trips up to 6 months (some with 25 different legs) in advance and save each leg in one master trip. For the past 6 months I have started to "wean" myself away from MS to BC. It has been a painful adventure, but I am learning. The real test will be this summer, when I will use BC for all my trips.

    Hi,
Wow another 2720 user. Mine is still hanging on - - barely.

I still have one, too. It sits on the dash of my daily driver Jeep. Still works fine. The other GPS's are all for the bikes.

Just replace the digitizer on my 2730, it's still hanging in there.
  • Can you confirm, SUSSAMB, that in Basecamp one can use ‘Avoid a road’ and not just ‘Avoid an area’?

Mapsource is able to do both see https://support.garmin.com/en-ZA/?faq=InlrLusJfR5c5qPrlF2vn7 while in  Basecamp, it is said, there is no ‘Avoid a road’.

I as a Mapsource user am looking for a seasoned Basecamp user who can confirm ir or deny it?

    Thanks

  • No way of just avoiding a road I'm afraid.
