Use Route Drawing tool on existing route

I have just gone through an exercise of tracing over some track data to build a route in Basecamp. To do this I used the route drawing tool and would click to add the non alerting points into the route. What I found is that if I stopped the process and went to view another route or track, when I went back to keep adding to my route the routing tool would just add a new route instead of letting me add to the route I was just working on.

If I chose to add to the route, it only let me add waypoints and not continue extending my route with the routing tool.

To get around this, I started a new route and then cut and pasted the non alerting points into the first route.

Is there any way to be able to start adding points to a route that are not saved waypoints that I am missing?

Thanks
  • Select the old route. Select the insert tool. Hover near the endpoint on the old route that you want to extend. A big black circle should appear. Now you can click and extend the route. It does take a little practice. If you are too close to the endpoint the black line will appear instead.
  • I recommend that you have the view toolbar open if you do a lot of editing/route building. I often lose focus on the map window when I am doing these sorts of things. The safest way to return focus to the map window is to click on your current view on the view toolbar (the one highlighted in yellow). This way, you won’t inadvertently add a waypoint or track/route point.

It also has a toggle for the overview map. The overview map is one of the ways to repositionthe map without losing focus on your current activity (creating/editing tracks and routes). Move the cursor over the overview map and hand will appear. Click and move the hand just like you would in the map window.

Thank you very much. Wish I had posted this sooner. It is so simple, yet seemed so elusive when I was trying to figure it out on my own.

Thanks for the tips. They definitely are helpful when doing route building.
