I believe I read somewhere that officially the maximum number of waypoints in a GPX file is 1000, so 14,000 would indeed be too many :)

In theory the number of waypoints (or any other data) in a GPX file should only be limited by the file size. That said BaseCamp may have limits (why?).

Well the limit is not 1000, because I can pull the 3191 public campsites with electricity into Basecamp no problem. I think there is a max, and it is somewhere between the 3191 and the 16,844 in the total list (I opened them and counted in Excel). I made an extract of the no-electric campsites in GA, NC and SC (<200) and that pulled into Basecamp OK along with all the electric campsites.

So .... if I actually knew what the max was, then I could break my list down by USA region in Excel, and then import/delete regions whenever I was getting close to that area.

I did say I'd read that officially the limit was 1000 ... the article implied that more could be included. Clearly you've managed 3191 but 16,844 seems too many. I guess you either have to keep experimenting or hope that someone else knows the exact number :confused:

Well FALAGAR should be able to tell us what the BC limit is if there is one.

Under the hood BC saves data in a GDB file. I'm not aware of a practical limit (as I recall 32-bit integers are used for counts--so 4,294,967,296 is the limit) to the amount of data it can contain.

After discussing with wife, she didn't want to stay anywhere there was neither water nor electric, so I created two gpx files and was able to get both of them into Basecamp. The water.gpx contains 4521 wapoints and the water+elec contains 3191, or 7712 waypoints. So I am guessing 10,000. In any case this is for me a GREAT trip planning tool!! Yay. All I need now is for gas to drop back to $0.35 a gallon like it was in High School.

I obtained the master list for $6.95 from < http://www.ultimatecampgrounds.com/uc/index.php >, and created some code to break that 16,842 waypoint file down into the desired water+elec gpx and the water-only gpx. If anyone has paid for this poi, and wants to do what I have done, I could assist for nada. But you gotta buy it first. Fair is fair.

If BC is going to be the only software supported by Garmin and you can't save portions as a separate file then BC should be prepared to maintain quite large file structures. We have no other option but to do seperate backups and reload as needed which is not part of the common structure of a database. Could get intresting. I will probably never fill up a file but some young user over the years could possibily do so. Remember when a 120meg hard drive was huge......

120MB??? The first PC I used (Olivetti M24 PC/XT clone) had a 10MB MFM hard disk. Of course it also had PC-DOS 2.1 (have a copy in a VM).

MapSource is still a usable option for some of us. Save your data in (separate) GDB files and put them where you please.

I have 11,000 waypoints in one list. This is waypoints of campgrounds and truck stops. No problems; however, I imported them from MapSource and I have not counted to make sure all are in the list. I have not found any that are missing when I compare my MS with BC routes. I have BC 4.1.0 not 4.1.1. I have not found any reason to upgrade yet.

Did you consider the possibility that the issue is the number of points in the gpx file and not a limit of points in BaseCamp? I think this is more likely, since Garmin devices have limits on how many files, waypoints, tracks (and number of points in tracks) etc. that they will allow.

From an organizational standpoint (lists), it would be a good idea to keep your device limits in mind. You might be able to successfully send a large list to your device, but it may cause problems.
