Delete Catagories From Favorites?

Hello, I have a Nuvi 1450 and I use Basecamp for various things. The problem I have is that when Basecamp uploades to the Nuvi, it creates a new category in the Favorites. The category (or group) is labeled as the date of the upload, for example "2/9/13 8:31:38 AM". The default categories are things such as Address, Food, Lodging, etc. I am getting several of these things in the Favorites.

I want to delete the categories in the favorites. I know how to put favorites in different categories, I know how to create a new category but I can't figure out how to delete the categories I no longer want.

I don't know if I am using the correct terminology, by category I mean the next page after selecting the Favorites icon.

I have looked at all the device settings, also Basecamp. I can't find any way to remove these things.

I want to delete the categories in the favorites.

I'm assuming you want to delete Categories in your 1450, BaseCamp doesn't have "Categories"--it has lists.

The only way to remove a Category in your unit is to go to every Favorite in that category and remove it from the category (untick it). Once there are no more Favorites in that category it'll automatically be removed.
  • You have to do this on the nuvi, not in BC. Once you have changed the categories in Favourites so that there are no Favourites in the Category you want to delete it then it will be deleted.

Edit: Stu beat me to it :)

Well, thanks for the quick responses. I was afraid you all would say that. I was guessing that removing each favorite from the category would solve the problem. There are about a hundred favorites in each, sheesh. Guess it's something I can do while drinking a beer and watching TV.

    Thanks again

Well I don't use BaseCamp to transfer Favorites but since you can't rename Categories I've had to go through the remove/re-add procedure.

Beer does seem to make the process faster/easier ;)
  • Well the other option if you have them all listed in BC is to delete them all off your nuvi, sort them properly in BC and then send them all again to the nuvi.

Another option is to install Mapsource, transfer from the device to Mapsource, and use Mapsource to clean things up. You can make bulk changes in Mapsource and Mapsource actually groks Categories in the waypoint properties ... No mindbending fakery and cleanup required.

I still use Mapsource for backing up and managing my waypoints (Favorites). I just cut/paste from Mapsource into Basecamp if I need to use Basecamp for something I can't do in Mapsource. One thing I never ever do is transfer waypoints from Basecamp into one of my Nuvis because of the mess I invariably have to clean up. It's a pity they only took half the category/listname logic out of Basecamp. They should have removed it all. :(

Yes... Basecamp need to get control over editing categories and the Nuvis also need better tools on board. The auto generation of categories from Basecamp and within the Nuvis is horrible. The programmers really need to try using these things themselves.

As long as I can use Mapsource to connect with my three Nuvis I don't mind that they can't do anything about categories in bulk. It is sufficient for me to be able to add a category on the Nuvi if I create a waypoint/favorite or to be able to change or delete a category from a single waypoint/favorite. Trying to do anything more complicated on that small touchscreen device would be a pain, anyway. Much easier to manage the bulk stuff in Mapsource. And Mapsource has the right tools to make it really easy.

Too bad good things like that were left out of Basecamp. But no point in whining about it now. The decision was made a long time ago that Basecamp will never support categories as waypoint properties.

A category for each list in which a waypoint exists.

When I Send a List to my GPS, BC adds a category to every Waypoint for every list in which that Waypoint is located. If I have my "Home" waypoint in 9 lists, I'll get 9 Categories, one for each list in which the Waypoint exists. That is not a practical way for BC to act. I have NO use for those Categories.
  • Well there's no need to use them.

Some like to have waypoints in various lists, but if you don't just select 'All favorites' when you're looking to find favourites on your nuvi :)

Or else simply delete the Home waypoint from 8 of the categories on your nuvi, it only takes a few seconds.
