See OSM gmapsupp.img in Basecamp?

I downloaded an OSM gmapsupp.img file (~3.6 GB), have it on an SD card, see it on my Edge 705 and also in BC when the 705 is connected. How do I get it so I can see that map and layout rides, etc. when the 705 is not connected?

It took a loooonnngggg time for BC to read the map off the 705 the first time I tried (~1 hr), but now it seems it's cached in BC so it shows up immediately once I connect the 705.

Even more info: I have authentic Garmin CN SD cards for US and EU that won't show up in BC when installed in the 705. Garmin sent me new ones, which do show up, but those sometimes go away mid ride and I have to cycle the power on the 705 to get them back....????

You will need it on a SD card or memory stick (I'm not sure if the card you mention is installed in your Edge or not) then if necessary use GMTK from javawa to make the map visible in BC, download it from here:

Where did you get this OSM file from? Usually the same map is offered in both a compiled form for a GPS (the gmapsupp.img file) and a version that you can install on your computer.
When there isn't a computer version, you could copy the Garmin folder with the gmapsupp.img file to a USB memory stick. BC treats it as if it is a real GPS.
There are also programs that can convert a gmapsupp.img to a format that can be used on the computer, but this method has some serious drawbacks.

Hey, thanks for the responses.

I looked at the tool at www.javawa.nl and though it does a lot of stuff, it's not clear to me what it does that I need to do to enable me to see the map without connecting the Edge.

Putting the map file on a memory stick to emulate connecting the Edge is something I can try, though it's a bit less convenient than simply having it on the hard drive. I guess I could live with that if that's the only reasonable way of doing it.

It's a pity they don't offer a PC version of the map... IMHO the memory stick option is the easiest solution.

As for my programs: JaVaWa GMTK is meant for managing computer installed maps; it's not going to be of any use in this case. It cannot copy maps from a device to the computer.

(The functionality SUSSAMB was referring to is actually part of another program, JaVaWa Device Manager. However, the map on the Edge already shows up in BaseCamp; no need to change anything)

Even though the map shows up when on your Edge I've had 3rd party maps that have shown up on my Etrex 20 but not on a card without using JaVaWa Device Manager to make it visible in BC. So if you try it on a memory stick and BC doesn't see it then use that.

OSM on memory stick works! But have routing problem with OS map.

Finally got a thumb drive, put the OSM in a GARMIN directory on it and it showed up in basecamp! Great. One problem I had when I first tried OSM maps a couple of years ago is that when trying to create a route following roads, there seems to invisible impenetrable barriers on some roads that can't be routed through. The Basecamp will route up to that point than take what ever detour is necessary to get around to the other side of that point. Is there a workaround for this?

The OSM maps do not contain complete routing data. It's not an "impenetrable barrier". It's that there simply is not any routing data for those road sections so the autorouting features have no data to work with.

Result is the same, though. :)

It might be a problem with the specific maps you are using. I suggest trying some other OSM based maps, eg from this website: http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/
Those maps include an installer for BaseCamp.

If those maps have routing problems in the same place, it may be an error in the OSM data. If you post a link to it on openstreetmap.org (use the permalink option), I could check if anything seems to be wrong.
