Waypoints, Via Points & Shaping Points: BaseCamp vs Montana GPSr

A very interesting discussion concerning how these work in Basecamp vs how they work with the Garmin Montanan GPSr can be found on the ADV forum, New Garmin Montana thread, starting on or about page 454 (or post #6796), through the current end of the thread.

Seems to be quite a few differing opinions, and many users have conducted their own experiments and shared results, yet a concise and accurate answer seems to evade us.

I am asking the question here, as we are all discussing route behavior after they are transferred to our Montana GPSr from BaseCamp, as they do not appear to follow the same rules as BaseCamp, and many users are very confused as to the correct methods to create Routes in BaseCamp for their Montana GPSr so they will behave the same on both platforms...

Can we get some official word from Garmin regarding this subject matter, please?
  • Apparently no one with Garmin knows anything about shaping points, via points, and way points as they relate to Garmin GPS devices...
    DOES GARMIN HAVE ANY ANSWERS???
  • Perhaps the device teams could provide you with those answers. Calling Product Support for valid contact info might work.

For those of you who have been following these forums for a while it should be apparent that Garmin has only recently begun to rationalize the interface between their software and device development teams. My guess is that it will be at least one more generation of devices before devices start "to follow the same rules as BaseCamp" In the meantime, if you have a question about how your device works direct your questions to the device team they designed it to work the way it does.

    Nice deflection.

Unfortunately, when you ask the device team the same question, they reply with a similar deflection, suggesting we post our questions about BaseCamp function here.

Long story short, GARMIN will not answer the questions, and will not provide any meaningful documentation or functional descriptions explaining the relationship between thier own products, making it nearly impossible for their (once) loyal consumers to use said products in any productive manner.

I suspect a huge disconnect exists within GARMIN between product software teams, and they themselves do not know the answers to these questions.

You know, "The right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing..." syndrome.

Meanwhile, we continue to foolishly spend hundreds and thousands of dollars for GARMIN products GARMIN refuses to document functional descriptions for.....
