Find Bug in 4.05 might be in 4.1

This is a bug I found in version 4.05 that I suspect also exists in 4.1 based on some of the posts regarding City searches.

The find function does not appear to search the entire database.

In one of FALAGAR’s screen shots for 4.1 there was a park called Desert Breeze. I did a Find>Recreation>Park/Garden near center of view for Desert Breeze (v4.05). My view at the time consisted of the eastern U.S. (zoom level ca. 150 mi on my monitor). The search failed to find any parks. I zoomed out to show all of the lower 48 and still no hits (center of search marker indicated eastern Kansas). After finding out where it was by other means and verifying that it is in the database, I tried some near city searches. Near Cheyenne, Wy failed to find the park, while near Denver, Co was successful.

Perhaps there is a search radius limit of 1000 km (ca. 621 mi)? Whatever the cause, I suspect this is the reason some people are failing to find cities or getting a limited number of search results. Find needs to search the entire database.

Yes, currently BaseCamp will only find named POIs if they are close to the search center. So if you happen to know that Desert Breeze Park (it can't be in the Eastern US, it's in the desert!) is in Arizona and that Phoenix is in Arizona you can search for "Desert Breeze, Phoenix, AZ" (in BaseCamp 4.1) and it will find the park (which is actually in Chandler, AZ, but Phoenix gets you close enough).

Now, obviously this is not ideal. So we are looking to add the by name search as well, so it would work the way you are expecting. I am just trying to explain how you could make it work in the current version of BaseCamp.
  • Thank you for the reply and your efforts. Yes, I suspected that Desert something would be in the western half of the US. But I also suspected there would not be a lot of parks with Desert in them and I was in no particular hurry to get a hit.

However, I think most uses would naturally assume, as I did, that a find function would eventually search the entire database. It’s good to know that at some point this may be the case. But I feel I should point out that any limitations to a find function is information that a user needs to know, that it is not readily apparent in BaseCamp (at least for me) and that it should be.

    Keep up the good work.
