Issues with BaseCamp 4.1.0

There are some serious device connection issues with BaseCamp 4.1.0. That is why we pulled it from the auto-update servers. You can still download it from http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4435 if you want to.

We are working on fixing the most pressing issues. They will be addressed in BaseCamp 4.1.1.

I'll outline the 2 most common issues and how to work around them in case you already installed 4.1.0:

1. You have a device connected and start BaseCamp, or you have BaseCamp running and connect a device -> BaseCamp stops responding.
Fix: This is most likely caused by a gpi file on your GPS. Look for 006D135900.gpi in the .System or POI folder. Rename the file to something else (006D135900.bak for example). Restart BaseCamp.

2. BaseCamp 4.1 does not recognize your Nuvi, but earlier versions of BaseCamp did.
Fix: Switching the device to Mass Storage mode might fix this. Disconnect the device. Turn it on. Go to the Odometer screen (View Map, tap speed). Press your finger on the odometer for around 10 seconds. A debug screen should appear. Go to MTP settings. Select Mass Storage mode. Connect the device to BaseCamp.

I apologize for all the trouble. This is something we should have caught before releasing, but it slipped through somehow.
  • Hi,
I'm having the same 'crash' issue since Basecamp 4.1.0 installed. Sussamb, you posted a link to 4.0.5 for Windows. I tried mooching around for the Mac version but no luck. Do you (or anyone else) have a link I could use?

    Thanks

Thanks Sussamb. Installed cleanly and the .dmg stored away just in case.

    Falagar,
I was browsing through some other threads and on one a guy mentioned that the 006D135900.GPI was in .system. I re-installed the latest Basecamp (4.1.0), had a look and sure enough there it was. I 'moved it to trash' and connected the 1450LMT. Basecamp crashed repeatedly. Finally, I looked in .trashes on the 1450 and that's where OS X had put the offending file. I got rid of it and now basecamp 4.1.0 works fine. Whatever is in that gpi file appears to be lethal to basecamp!!

My initial report of 'no sign of the GPI' was before I made hidden files visible on OS X. Apologies and I hope I wasn't the cause of time being wasted.

Thanks for letting us know. I am glad you got it to work. On the PC, we ignore the .trashes folder, that's why I didn't mention that in my post.

No worries, no time was wasted. We have it fixed, now it's just a matter of verifying and testing the build and releasing 4.1.1 to get it out to everyone. This might take a few days.
  • Falagar:

Just realized my 'Home' key rotates the map view counter clockwise and my 'Page Up' key rotates the map view clockwise.

'End' and 'Page Down' have no effect.

    Is this normal.

    Is this correct intended behavior?

I have done the fix suggested here by FALAGAR and renamed the file .gpi file to get Basecamp working again with my Zumo connected. Everything seems to be working OK so far.
Can anyone tell me though if I save a .gpx file from this 4.1.0 version will the data be OK in the .gpx file to use on a Zumo device or is there a chance it could be corrupted?
I have to prepare a route and send it to many people this week and I'm concerned the data could be corrupt now due to this issue with 4.1.0. Am I safer to try and roll back to 4.0.5?
  • AFAIK the issue is simply with that particular file. I've had no problems saving/loading/using other gpx files. However if you want to play safe 4.0.5 is available here:

    Yeah, that is intentional.

In 3D view if you set the numbers block of your full-size keyboard to map to the special keys, you can use 2, 4, 6 and 8 to pan the map, 7 (Home) and 9 (PgUp) to rotate, 1(End) and 3 (PgDn) to adjust the pitch and - und + to zoom. It's been like this since the first version of BaseCamp I believe.

The GPI file issue has nothing to do with GPX at all. BaseCamp 4.1 does write compatible GPX files.

P.S. Boring technical stuff: GPI is a binary (that means it's not plain text) format that contains Custom POI information, usually only Garmin devices and software can read it. GPX is a human-readable XML file containing all kinds of different location-based data which can be read by any software or hardware that adheres to the GPX schema.
