Auto Routing with File Depot maps

I'm pretty new yet, but have downloaded some 24k topo maps from File Depot, specifically the MN topo. I was reading about the auto route feature and wanted to try it in Basecamp. I was unable to get it to follow roads or trails, just point to point. Are the maps from File Depot not suitable to use the auto route feature. Just wondering if anyone knows, I plan to get City Navigator at some point and expect it would work there. Any comment would be helpful.

Depends on the maps, if they're not routeable maps then it won't do what you want, and most topo maps are not routeable.

Almost none of the maps at GPSFileDepot are capable of creating routes. They can only show your position on the screen. If the map is routable, it will be indicated on the download page at GPSFileDepot. Otherwise, it cannot calculate routes.
