How do I find (anything) in the new version 4.1.0?

When I click on "find" in the top bar, a drop down menu appears.
I want to find an address so I click on "find address" and a new window opens showing addresses.
under showing results, it says "no results found"
This si not unexpected, as I was unable to type in the address to find.
My question? How do I find things in the so-called new inproved version of BaseCamp?

Yes you're right SUSSAMB. I mentioned London because of course we all know where it is........or should do LOL. But what about the case where you don't know where a city or town is exactly which brings me to the second example of Paris that I used. OK, I'm ignorant - I've heard Paris mentioned and I know it's somewhere in Europe but where exactly. I zoom out so that the entire European map fits the screen, type in Paris and Sweden shows up. Great......I can now meet up with my University friends in the bar later tonight and tell them that I now know where Paris is .........it's in Sweden of course everybody knows that LOL.
On a more serious note - we might laugh at these examples but believe me, I know first hand, that there are many of our American friends who are a bit er ........ lacking in Geography shall we say. A few American friends of mine have never heard of Malta let alone know where it is. There was also a survey a few years back when they were at war in Vietnam and less than 15% could locate it on a world map. So the moral of all this is that the Find function is very very important and should work.

Edit . FALAGAR recently posted this:-

......BaseCamp will only find named POIs if they are close to the search center. So if you happen to know that Desert Breeze Park (it can't be in the Eastern US, it's in the desert!) is in Arizona and that Phoenix is in Arizona you can search for "Desert Breeze, Phoenix, AZ" (in BaseCamp 4.1) and it will find the park (which is actually in Chandler, AZ, but Phoenix gets you close enough).

Now, obviously this is not ideal. So we are looking to add the by name search as well, so it would work the way you are expecting. I am just trying to explain how you could make it work in the current version of BaseCamp.

The method he is referring to (in bold) is what I quoted a few posts back. My Paris example demonstrates that this method doesn't work either.
  • I agree the Find feature needs to be better, but even in your Paris example if I type it in, Paris, 75, France comes top of my list, with Paris, Swe 4th :)

I didn't mean to imply you don't need to type. You will still have to type the name of the city.

Having the POI > Cities filter on just limits results to cities which is all I meant to outline. I apologize for causing confusion.

You will always get the 30 cities closest to the search center. Which is actually pretty useful if you are zoomed in, it's probably less useful if you are zoomed out all the way.

Thanks SUSSAMB and FALAGAR. I think my screengrab shows that even when typing in the city i.e. Paris, BC can throw up some strange results putting Paris in Sweden for example. I agree FALAGAR that the method outlined is less than useful when zoomed right out but even MapSource even with it's less than perfect Find feature was ten times better at finding something than BC is. Hopefully this will be given some serious thought to in future releases.
  • Not sure what's happening but as I said Paris France pops up first in my list and Paris Sweden (yes there is one) comes up 4th, don't you get the same result? If not which map are you using?

European map set v2013.3.....the latest. Oh I can get Paris to show up in France alright but only if I zoom in so that basically France fills the screen and no sight of Sweden. If I zoom out (see again earlier screengrab) so that more of Europe fills the screen then Paris is relocated to Sweden with no mention of Paris, France.
Also interesting is the 0 metres to the right of the location (see again earlier screengrab). What does this mean? I thought at first that as BC should relocate the searched city to the centre of the screen then 0 metres would be the distance from the centre of the screen which obviously would be nothing. However, in my screengrab, Paris is indicated top left of the screen so that throws the 0 metres idea in the air.
  • Sorry, I'm not seeing your screen grab? Even if I position my map so that Sweden fills the screen I still get Paris, Fra coming up

You can still search for just cities. Go to find options (Ctrl-Alt-F), pick Points of Interest, and then pick 'Cities' in the dropdown box under 'More Options'.

Thanks. I would not have found that on my own as I am just not used to thinking of cities as Points of Interest. No other Garmin application or GPS has ever lumped cities there.
