How do I find (anything) in the new version 4.1.0?

When I click on "find" in the top bar, a drop down menu appears.
I want to find an address so I click on "find address" and a new window opens showing addresses.
under showing results, it says "no results found"
This si not unexpected, as I was unable to type in the address to find.
My question? How do I find things in the so-called new inproved version of BaseCamp?
  • Look at the results list, there is animated icon indicating that search is in progress. IMO if you start new search while BaseCamp is processing previous one, you won't get valid results.

But these are minor problems at interface. Basic problem is that search engine is naive, unusable for address search. Just try to search for a street name alone:
On Mapsource you will have hints, which names are valid and you will get results in a second, that includes streets in multiple cities.
Nuvi 34xx has universal input field similar to BaseCamp. If you put street name there, you will get results in 5 seconds, including multiple cities.
Now if you put street name in BaseCamp, it will be searching for many minutes (I gave up after 10 minutes) finding one or nothing, depending on current position of a map.

Alright, I have played with the new format of the search feature and I have figured out how to use it, and I can see eventually liking it better than the previous interface.

However, one issue I have is that I frequently search for city names, and there is no way to get results for that now. I am given a choice of Points of Interest, Addresses, and User Data.

The last version of Basecamp had Cities as a choice for searching. Now, if I have a map of Texas up, and put Austin into the search bar, Austin, TX, is not one of the results returned.

You can still search for just cities. Go to find options (Ctrl-Alt-F), pick Points of Interest, and then pick 'Cities' in the dropdown box under 'More Options'.
  • Discovered that the other day and meant to post ... why are cities now considered POIs !!

Good to know that I can find cities again. Agree its odd (to say it mildly) that a city is now a POI ..
Of course a city should be find by just entering the name in find box!
    Awaiting the next version.. :)

I agree that hitting Find > Find Address not returning anything is not the way it should be.

As others pointed out, you have to actually provide a search term (address in this case) for the search to return any results. We'll definitely work on that for 4.2.

    I apologize for the trouble.

Thanks. I really appreciate the process of allowing users to give feedback as the software is developed. For reasons I do not understand, which could include user error, I did not have the search box in the upper right of my screen, I could only access search through the find menu. Using the process described in post #10 (thanks Jack! ) I was able to get the search box back. Still issues...cities are a higher order of civilization that POIs and should receive a greater measure of respect within the program hierarchy than just another roadside attraction :)

Maybe you would care to try this FALAGAR. Zoom out (Europe map set) until the United Kingdom fills the screen. Ok, you'll get a bit of the rest of Europe but what is important is that you get all of the United Kingdom showing. Now follow the method that you have outlined in the quote and see what results you get. I get a list of 30 towns (not cities) and a whole host of blue flags centred in a single cluster in the North of England. If I wasn't aware that London was in the South of England then from that list I am no further forward.
If I now zoom out and readjust so that only one half of England fills the screen and repeat the proceedure I get a cluster of towns in the Midlands and again no mention of London in the drop-down list.
In both examples the clusters form around the centre of the screen/view making the procedure that you outline useless.
In fact the only effective way of finding London is to type it into the top right-hand search box.
  • Strange ... London pops up whichever way I use as first in the list, even populates the box as I type when using falagars method, unless I'm misunderstanding what you're saying

SUSSAMB ...... I think you're possibly misunderstanding what I am saying because there is no typing involved. Following what FALAGAR says you should simply have to click on Find followed by clicking on Points of Interest and then click on Cities in the drop down box on the right hand side. Using his method London should appear in the list of cities which it doesn't. The only way to get London to appear is to type it into the search box which shouldn't be necessary and has already been acknowledged.

If you want a laugh take a look at this. I typed Paris into the search box and the first one in the list - in fact the only one - puts Paris in Sweden LOL. To add insult to injury it shows it as being 0 metres and I ask myself - zero metres from where exactly?

  • Ah, got you. But that will simply return the nearest cities to the centre of the screen won't it? So it's perhaps not surprising that London doesn't appear?
