How do I find (anything) in the new version 4.1.0?

When I click on "find" in the top bar, a drop down menu appears.
I want to find an address so I click on "find address" and a new window opens showing addresses.
under showing results, it says "no results found"
This si not unexpected, as I was unable to type in the address to find.
My question? How do I find things in the so-called new inproved version of BaseCamp?
  • Yes, strange, that doesn't work for me either as there seems to be no way to actually input an address

As a work around, you should have a search box at the top right, type the address directly into that.

Falagar did say here https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?33898-BaseCamp-4-1-0-is-available that find was a 'work in progress' and will be refined further in 4.2 so he may pick up on this problem :)

If this wasn't such a serious matter one could possibly clarify it as being a farcical comedy. I means let's face it, the whole purpose of a GPS is to navigate one from point A to point B with possibly a few places in between. We're now on version 4 of BC and still Garmin haven't got a usable Find function, in fact it's probably worse now than it's ever been............unbelievable.
If I had my way I'd have all their software writers safely enclosed somewhere out of harms way and given a Rubic Cube to play with whilst at the same time grabbing a handful of 15 year olds with an interest in computers and ask them to get BC sorted out.

That's not a work around, that's the way you do it! Type the address into the search box and press return. Pretty easy, no?

I for one do not want to recreate the Map Source search item input process. Just never found that to be intuitive. I will grant that most times the MS search results were superior to what we used to get in previous versions of BaseCamp.

The only niggle I have is the inclusion of the term "name" in the search field. Should be something more inclusive and more suggestive. It might even be better to have it be blank since on the Mac version it sits right above the word "Search" and it contains a magnifying glass icon universally understood to mean "search."

I think of the other items on the Find drop down menu as just a quick way of allowing me to limit the search or change the search item types without having to go change my search options. This is useful where a search term can refer to more than one type of thing. Once you have done a search you can re-search again for different item types without having to once again enter that search term in the search field.
  • Well it is a work around if you prefer to use Find, Find Addresses as the OP does ... you at least expect to be able to enter an address :) All the other drop downs under Find work, so Find Addresses should also.

The changes to the find function do not appear to me as a user to be improvements. While I appreciate the fact that BaseCamp does a lot more than MapSource , it should not be at the expense of critical core functions of the software. 'Find' an address (or a city, POI etc) is so fundamental to using the program it should be extremely easy and fast to use. The find box for typing in the address should not require several clicks to get there, it has to be there as part of the default screen. Let people who don't use it minimize it I suppose, but relegating searching for an address to be a minor, difficult to access, and non-intuitive part of the program is a big step backwards.

With moving the program towards so many more functions and addressing the needs of different user groups, I think that moving towards user customization of the interface is necessary. Let me set the program up for fast access of the parts of it that I use, and let me get rid of (hide) all the stuff I do not use.
  • I don't understand the problem.

If you enter the address you are looking for and press enter it will give you the address and those around it also.

I have stayed at a RV Park in Maine called Pumpkin Patch RV Resort. I entered Pumpkin Patch and it came right up with it.

I really don't like the find in Mapsource. It limits you to much. I like entering the address delimited with commas like you would normally do in other applictions and it will come right up.

    FWIW

  • I'm not disagreeing with that and the new search feature is way better than it was. My beef is with the fact that if, as some users will do, they select Find, Find Address from the menu bar they don't get any option to insert an address and the sequence simply looks like a dead end. Either they ought to be able to input an address at that point or the 'Find address' from that menu needs to be removed. Falagar has already said this new 'find' feature is a 'work in progress' so any feedback will be useful.

This is definitely an interface error.

The expected behavior upon selecting Find Address from the drop down would be for a Find Box to appear.

The Find Box as implemented is a movable tool bar element. It appears in the Default Toolbar.

I removed it from the Toolbar and then did a Find Address from the drop down. It never reappeared but the results column did.

They need to recode this function so the following happens:

    1) If the Find Search Box is visible in the Toolbar it should receive the focus and the entry text box should highlight and receive the cursor.

    2) If the Find Search Box is not visible then surface it adjacent to the Drop Down, give it the Focus, move the cursor to the entry text box and highlight the field.

There are few alternatives given that for all other search item types they simply use the center of the map as the search starting point. But it appears that they don't do that if you select Find:Address from the drop down.

As an example I used the hand tool to move the map a little west of Chicago. I typed "Cook" in the search box and used the Find:Address dropdown to start the search. Within seconds the search results column opened under Addresses, the search box cleared and said No Results Found. Then I simply retyped the word "Cook" in the search box, pressed enter and started getting Address results!

After even more playing around and experimenting it appears that the Find:Address drop down is totally dysfunctional for initiating a search even with an entry in the search box.

P.S. I'm using the Mac version of BaseCamp.

I agree that hitting Find > Find Address not returning anything is not the way it should be.

As others pointed out, you have to actually provide a search term (address in this case) for the search to return any results. We'll definitely work on that for 4.2.

    I apologize for the trouble.
