Cloud Storage

Every Garmin user will have 150MB of cloud storage to sync your data (waypoints, routes, tracks, etc.) between different computers. This should be fairly seemless, just log in with your MyGarmin account, drag and drop data into your cloud storage device and it will be synced on the cloud so can access it if you run BaseCamp on a different machine.

Part I of Find Rework

BaseCamp will now search for several data types concurrently (like the Mac version has been doing for a while). There is no city selector box anymore (you should just be able to search for e.g. "sea world, san diego, ca" from anywhere on the map). We added a find menu. You can search in your data as well now (useful if your collection has grown very large).

Find is still a work in progress, but any feedback would be more than welcome. There will be further find improvements in 4.2.

Custom POIs

BaseCamp can now display and search for Custom POIs (contained in GPI files) that are on the device.

Report Map Errors

Now you can just right-click on the map and report a mapping error directly to Garmin. The form will be prefilled with the map product and the location. Reporting map errors does make a difference and our cartography team is very eager to receive them. So report away!

For those that can't wait for the official BaseCamp download page to update you can get it from

    http://www8.garmin.com/gcdfiles/BaseCamp_410.exe

    :)
  • Did you intentionally leave out some longstanding waypoint catagories when searching? Specifically, there seems no way to specify food/drink, intersections, and auto services.
Also how do you set the location for the center of the search?

You can still do that. Click on the gear symbol when the find toolbar is open, then pick 'Points of Interest' and you can specify what you want to search for.

BaseCamp will always search from the center of the screen. Unless you type in a city name in the search box (or the location box), so if you search for "starbucks, seattle, wa" BaseCamp will recenter the map on Seattle and search for Starbucks from there.
  • I tried that and when I pick the "Points of Interest" then is no subcategory in the "More Options" pull down for "Food/Drink". I see attractions, cities, entertainment, etc.

I see that if I pan the map to a new location and search the results are indeed centered around the center of the map. If I want to move to a new location you need to close the Find window and start over. I was trying to use the Refresh to do an new search.

We didn't remove these categories on purpose. Are you sure that showed up in 4.0.5 with the same map? Do these categories show up in MapSource?

You can hit the button with the blue magnifying glass to start a new search at the currently set location. We'll probably change the refresh button to have the same behavior in 4.2.
  • I just tried it with Mapsource 6.16.3 with CNNA 2013.3. There are several subcategories that show up in Mapsource that don't in BC. They are Bank/ATM, Food & Drink, Auto Services, Shopping. There is a category called Marine in BC that I don't see in Mapsource.

OK on the Mag glass starting a new search. Thanks.
  • Cloud storage is a good idea but ...

    Not able to store BirdsEye?
Not able to store Folder/List structure so all you get is one long list?

Guess at the moment I'll stick with carrying around a memory stick with the Basecamp Data Folder on it.
  • Something still very wrong with the search option.

Using CN 2013.30 I can search for the street I live in while I'm viewing it on the map by simply typing Gorse Avenue in the search box and BC finds it.

Move the map so my street is a 20 or so miles away and it doesn't find it but finds other Gorse Avenue further away. Seems to be affected by distance/zoom.

Not just my street either as have tried it with other addresses.

This doesn't happen with POIs. I tried with a name that was a street name as well as being included in a POI close to the street. BC found the POI every time and at various distance/zoom levels but not the street.

Guess I'll still have to stick to Mapsource for searching :(

(Annoyingly when it does find it it displays a box that shows the postcode so it knows it's there, I know you're planning to do so but I just hope postcode/zipcode search is implemented soon as it should be a significant improvement to the search function)
  • For me indexed address search works only on City Navigator map. Can't get reliable search on older Garmin maps nor on cgpsmapper maps.

It looks like there is indexed search if you follow address template as "street, city". This is language dependent and actually wrong in Polish, where people write address as "city, street". Query in Polish format doesn't find any address in BaseCamp at all. So removing city field gives rather problems than advantages.

Some releases ago when pressing Ctrl '-' BaseCamp zoomed map to full extent. This worked for maps installed on PC. Would be nice to have it back.
