Basecamp 4.0.5 hanging on startup

I've got Win 7, Basecamp 4.0.5. Installation of Basecamp completed without errors as far as I can tell, but when I start Basecamp it displays the splash screen and hangs indefinitely. Eventually Windows figures out it's not responding and allows me to kill it.

I have deinstalled, reinstalled, deleted My Garmin from My Documents, tried all sorts of things, but the problem persists. Seems to be waiting on something, but I don't know what.

thanks

Not sure what might be going on. My guess would be that either something is wrong with your data or BaseCamp is unhappy with something in the Windows installation.

To test theory #1 you could backup and then delete BaseCamp's database folder. It is located at %appdata%\Garmin\BaseCamp. (Hit Windows-key+E to open file explorer then copy/paste %appdata%\Garmin\BaseCamp into the address bar and hit Enter to get to it).

If BaseCamp starts then, let me know and we will figure out a way to get the data back.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't have that folder. I created it: no difference. I renamed the %appdata%\Garmin folder, removed BaseCamp and then reinstalled it. It recreated the %appdata%\Garmin directory when it ran, but still hangs at the splash screen. Any other ideas? Are there any diagnostic flags I can run to get some information on where it's getting stuck?

    thanks

That's strange, you should definitely have that folder if you had BaseCamp installed. Can you try to run BaseCamp as Administrator?

I've tried running as administrator. Same result.

I am really not sure what it might be then.

My only other advice would be to contact product support. They might have seen this before and would know what you could install trying to fix this. Link is in my signature.

We are also releasing BaseCamp 4.1.0 very soon, maybe it fixes the issue.

I am sorry I cannot be of more assistance and apologize for the inconvenience.

    Morning John

I have win 7 with BaseCamp 4.0.5 & it takes a few extra seconds to load & come up. You can tell it is searching for something or dragging while starting.

So far it has always loaded & seems to work fine once loaded but it sure doesn't load quickly. I also have 2 MapSource versions on my Win 7 computer & quite a few NT maps as well as some rather large Topo maps. Maybe it is accessing those maps during the loading process.

Does your BaseCamp load any quicker if you hook your GPS to your PC first?

Not sure if this is of any help or in fact is related to this problem, however, on my machine (also W7 x64) I noticed that there is a short splash screen - very short - that is mostly hidden behind the normal BC splash screen upon startup. Using FastStone Capture I made a short movie of starting up BC and then imported it into WLMM and played the video back frame by frame. The mostly hidden additional splash screen turns out to be 'Checking Geotagged Photos' and I took a screen grab of this single frame splash screen - see attachment.
I wonder if this additional splash screen is what is causing BC to hang upon startup for some users?

That dialog is shown in the data initialization phase (when BaseCamp reads and cleans up the database, if necessary). I had the original poster delete his data to make sure there's nothing wrong with it. So I don't think it's an issue with geotagged photos in this case.

It could be, that another program blocks a subroutine, which basecamp tries to read. So I would try to start Basecamp in a safe mode of the PC (by msconfig).
