Waypoint, etc. menu all gray on BaseCamp Garmin Nuvi 500

I swear I am not this technologically inept most of the time.
Thought it was just a one time deal, but I have connected to BC multiple times and never been able to select waypoint, route, etc. from that drop down menu because they are always gray. Connected to Garmin Nuvi 500, can see old tracks and four different maps, just can't use that part of the menu in any of the maps.
It says device is connected with limited speed, which might affect the performance of BC. We're not transferring GOPRO files here or anything, so I don't know what kind of BS that is or if it is related to this problem.
Please help, I thought this Garmin rig was going to be a lot easier to use.
Searched and read another thread vaguely related to this without any help, your help is appreciated!

You cannot directly create data on your device (it lacks user data sync capability). Make sure you have "My Collection" selected and the route, waypoint etc. buttons should be enabled. After you create your data in "My Collection" you can send them to your Nuvi.

I'm unclear what 'drop down menu' you're referring to. To select a track, route etc on your nuvi 500 you just select it from the units All data folder. You can right click the entries in there and select Show on map.
