Getting Elevation

I have multiple waypoints created for a trip, and I am using Garmin topo 100K and 24K maps with BaseCamp, but I can not find a way to make BaseCamp update each (or a group of) waypoints elevations using the data in those maps... What am I missing?
  • I’m not aware of any way to do this. If you want waypoints with elevation data you really should create them with an active map that has DEM data.

Since you have already created your waypoints, I would try changing the active map to one with DEM data and then use the move tool to drag each waypoint away and back. I would think this should add the elevation data.

I've never felt any need to do this myself, but have read that people use GPSVisualizer to add elevations to .gpx files: http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/elevation
  • I would like to make a formal request, FALAGAR, that garmin include an 'Update Elevation' button in the information tab and/or context menu and/or edit menu to allow the user to quickly and easily use the elevation taken from the active mapping product and apply it to the one or several waypoints/tracks/routes/etc highlighted.

Thanks for bringing this up. I've added it to our feature database.

The usual spiel applies: no guarantees if and when we will get around to doing this. The request makes sense and shouldn't be very hard to do, so maybe chances aren't so bad.

Thank you FALAGAR for the speedy response!

A little more info that may or may not matter:

In planning a cross country trip, I created several routes that use unique and shared waypoints between them, and calculate those routes using City Navigator map, which contains no DEM. I then switch to my TOPO 100K/24K maps and I can see the elevation plot in the Graph Tab for each route, but I have no way of making those elevations 'sticky' for those waypoints/via points before I switch back to City Nav.

Also, I can select several routes/tracks and view the elevation plot in the Graph Tab, and all selected routes/tracks will be superimposed for comparison, but there exist no 'Print' function when more than one elevation plot is displayed. Can I also add a formal request to add the 'Print' function to the Graph Tab when multiple routes/tracks are superimposed? Naturally, all normal disclaimer apply :)

Sure. I'll add that one as well.

You can also use TCX Converter for the time being, but you may need to edit the final file by hand in notepad because the last time I did it it didn't close one of the final tags when exporting gpx files.
