I am new with Base Camp and I am asking if what I want to do can or cannot be done. I work for a Fire Department and wondering if I put the address of all the fire stations in as waypoints etc, then find a ponint on the map if there is some way to list all the fire stations in closest order to that point. Got a feeling it can not be done, so does anyone have any ideas. The map will have a section/gird drawn on it and I would fine the center of that section and make it a waypoint and then create routes from that waypoint to all the firestation way points and hopefully it would tell me the distance of each. Thank you for any assistance in advance
Incidentally as well as using View, Swap Data Views you can also use Ctrl+Tab or click the thing that has opposing arrows on it between the main pane and the left hand panes (about half way up).
I knew HOW to swap data and map views from the beginning, but not WHY it might be useful, because the one time I did it, I didn't have a filter enabled, and thus didn't see anything useful.
I looked in the help section under Data Management, and I don't think it's at ALL clear what purpose swapping Data and Map views has. There is just one little sentence under #5, Filter data, that hints at the possibilities: "You can also click a column heading to sort data"
It doesn't make it clear that the columns are only visible when the view is swapped, nor that the columns available vary by data type, some providing little extra info, others, like Routes, providing very useful ways of sorting.
I'm going to make a case for clarifying this in the BaseCamp Wiki. which at present just copies the help file on this item.

I would like to clarify that while the Garmin BaseCamp help file is the original source material for the wiki, the wiki already contains much more information than the help file, and most of the original text has been edited and refined, with many more revisions and updates planned.
The BaseCamp wiki will evolve with BaseCamp, and always contain the most up to date information available.

Another reason I don't use Basecamp much. I hate that the only way you can get this view is to essentially close the map. In Mapsource I can view the tabular data AND the map. And I don't need to figure out filtering to make it appear.
For the longest time we asked for this view swapping silliness to be eliminated because it's annoying, adds no value and is ultimately unnecessary.

As I said, you "essentially close the map". It ends up being jammed into a tiny pane down in the corner that's completely unusable. Then you need to drag it back to a usable size in two dimensions (two separate operations). The whole thing ends up being three or four more operations than required to achieve the same thing in Mapsource (Simply drag the data pane a little wider. If you even need to.).
Yes, no big deal in this specific instance, if this were the only thing you were ever going to do with Basecamp. But Basecamp is full of these kinds of UI decisions that add a bunch of extra work for the user with no extra benefit in the end. And as has been pointed out in this and other discussions, the Basecamp UI effectively "hides" much of the really useful functionality that Basecamp contains but is hard to discover.

I suspect that is a deliberate design decision to cater to the "average user". Most of those just want to transfer waypoints and see them on maps. More sophisticated users want to plan and create routes and transfer those. Then there are the advanced users that want to do esoteric stuff (like the whole subject of this thread).
I know one program (Spybot) that has two UI modes: Basic and Advanced. A lot of the "useful stuff" is hidden in basic mode but you can switch to advanced for "full manual control". Some other apps I use have customizable (and multiple) menus and toolbars. This allows you to switch to another menu/toolbar set when you need to.

Which is not so bad when you are running three 1920x1080 displays side by side by side :)
I would love to see an option to put each pane in its own column, giving three side by side by side columns to work in :)
I would love love to see an option to NOT index all the data on my GPSr every time I connect it. Sometimes, I just want to send a route or waypoint, and am not interested in accessing any of the data on my device, but I have to wait an eternity for BaseCamp to index everything on my GPSr before I can send the one or two waypoints (etc.) that I need to. VERY frustrating.
