New replacement for Garmin StreetPilot 2720 ????

This may be the wrong place to post this, but I could not find a better place.

I have a Garmin 2720. I plan all my trips with BC with the waypoints I need and then transfer the route to my StreetPilot 2720. This way I can zoom in and see the details of the route on BC before I transfer the route. I LOVE the Garmin StreetPilot 2720 because of this feature. My son has a different Garmin (I do not know the model) but he can not transfer from MapSource or Base Camp to his Garmin.

I want to purchase a new Garmin that will allow me to use the 3D feature of the new maps. I am look to purchase a use Garmin on eBay. Any suggestions on which model I should be looking at?

Many may not remember that the early versions of BaseCamp only supported topo maps. It wouldn't even display road maps.

Almost four years ago to the day. :) http://garmin.blogs.com/pr/2009/01/introducing-basecamp-garmins-new-tool-for-planning-and-reviewing-all-of-your-outdoor-adventures.html

I had forgotten about that myself, but I think you're right. If the map didn't contain DEM (Digital Elevation Model) data, then Basecamp wouldn't display it. At the time I think US Topo 2008 was the only map with DEM although the 24k topo series was introduced somewhere around that same time.

And if you want BaseCamp 2.0.5 you can get it here :)

    http://www.gawisp.com/perry/mapsource/

    The digital signing date of BC 2.0.5 is ‎Tuesday, ‎June ‎09, ‎2009 14:26:11.

I did a web search and BaseCamp 2.0.4 for PC and BaseCamp 2.0.0.7 Beta for Mac were released on March 30th 2009 or thereabouts.
  • All of the Nuvi's "communicate" with Basecamp on a computer. They can all send and receive waypoints, they can all send tracks to the computer. NONE of the Nuvi's can receive tracks from the computer. But when it comes to ROUTES, then it gets hairy, Basecamp will happily send routes to any Nuvi. Some Nuvi's will just ignore them. Others will import them into a route. Newer models will convert the route to a "trip".

I agree that it's confusing and it isn't getting any easier to understand. The model numbers don't help. My 6 year old Nuvi 5000 can use "real" routes but it was discontinued two or three years ago. This thread may provide a few insights (or maybe not...) Which nuvi's support route import from Basecamp/Mapsource?

Thanks for clarifying the capability of various Nuvis relative to Basecamp.

I am quite familiar with routes and tracks. Currently I have a Zumo and a Montana. I have never come across trips but will most likely some day. I wonder, what are the key features of trips as seen from someone used to routes? I would much appreciate a clarification on that point if possible.
  • Thanks for the link to the discussion on routes and trips. Most useful. It is really scary what a trip based Nuvi will do to a carefully designed route from BaseCamp. If I understand correctly a trip does not have non-alert via points. Via points become waypoints with unpredictable names and the route gets segmented into individual pieces from waypoint to waypoint with no contiguous view. Thanks again for the clarification.

I am still looking and am asking for suggestions. I LOVE StreetPilot 2720. . . .:o

    The features I want:
    1. Must accept ROUTES from BC or MS. I review the list in the previous posting but still I am not sure of which one to purchase.
    2. I ONLY use the GSP in the car. It does not need to be portable. The size of the 2720 is not a problem for me. I do not need a "pocket size - portable unit"
    3. I prefer to purchase a used unit or a deep-discounted refurbished unit.
    4. Since I am upgrading, It would be nice to have lane assist. This is the only reason I do not purchase a used 2720 from eBay.
  • Try one of the 14xx series then. I have a 1490 that comes with lane assist and accepts routes from Basecamp and Mapsource. As it's now discontinued it should be available at a good price.

I suggested that early in this thread. I can only assume that TENOC rejected that option.
  • 765T does all that and is cheap as dirt on ebay.

    ... ken...

Thanks for your suggestion. I am still thinking about the 1490T. but
