Basecamp 3.3.3 and 4.0.5 losing maps

Hi,
Basecamp worked perfectly on my notebook (3.3.3) and my desktop computer (4.0.5).
They've had few maps installed, working perfectly.

After changing some options in the options window I started to get get these weird messages and BC no longer recognizes other maps than the "global map".
On BOTH computers!

I have tried to "Browse" and show the path to the right directory, but didn't work. I don't really understand what it wants, it doesn't want a directory path and is not giving any clues about the file it might need.

Anybody have any ideas?

The maps files and directories weren't moved from their places on the HDD.

I have updated the notebook to BC 4.0.5 in the meantime, but this one is no smarter than the old one...

How can I re-register these maps with this dumb piece of software that is BC?

You could try running GMTK from JaVaWa available here:

http://www.javawa.nl/gmtk_en.html

and see whether that will help?

BaseCamp doesn't require maps to be "registered". It simply looks for folder names ending in .gmap in

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Garmin\Maps (Win2K/WinXP)
C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps (Vista/Win7/Win8)

You say you browsed to the "right directory" but didn't say what that was. Are you seeing a

City Navigator Australia and New Zealand NT 2013.10.gmap

folder?

What Stuart says is true for the CN maps, but other maps can be elsewhere so it'll depend on whether you have other maps that are 'missing'?

Just remembered that there was a problem a while back where updating BC caused map recognition problems, but that's been fixed now so I don't think it will apply.

If all you have are the CN maps then follow Stuart's advice.

Good point. I'd forgotten that. BaseCamp would "delete" registry based (older) map products upon an update. I don't recall an issue with GMAP (newer) maps though.

Edit: Can't find the thread about BaseCamp "losing" registry based maps. I don't remember what BC version it started with.

And not necessarily older, some current 3rd party maps are still registry based, I know cause I have a couple :)

It also looks for maps in C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Application Data\Garmin\Maps (XP) or C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\GARMIN\Maps (> XP)
However, the gmap-folder doesn't need to be physically in one of those folders; it also works when there is a shortcut file pointing to the real location. Based on the error in the screenshot, it seems that this is the case and that the real location is misplaced somehow (resulting in a shortcut to a non-existing location).

Agreed. Not sure how "changing some options in the options window" would affect anything. Probably just coincidence. Perhaps the shortcut got removed or the actual .gmap folder (what the shortcut points to) was moved.

It seems the OP is in Australia or New Zealand and it's 2013 (or very near) there now. The OP may not be back for a few days ;)

PS: Thanks for the additional map search paths. Interesting that maps can be on a per user account basis.

This enables you to install maps on a computer when you don't have admin privileges. On the Mac the user profile is the default location for maps.

I guess that works if .NET is already installed. If not you'd need admin privileges anyway.
