Installing maps to PC and Nuvi

The red progress bar means that Basecamp can't display the file. Your best bet is to run JaVaWa's Device manager available from here http://www.javawa.nl/jdm_en.html

This allows you to look at all the map files on your device/card. It will show you which maps are visible in Basecamp and allow you to 'make visible' any that aren't.

I don't use the US 24K and 100K maps (as I live in the UK) but the main difference AFAIK (apart from the scale of course) is that the 100K aren't routeable maps whereas the 24K ones are.

Is there anyway to find out where these maps came from? I'm beginning to think that they are 3rd party. I could possibly get some use out of the northern Utah and Nevada maps but I'll likely just end up purchasing from Garmin the maps that I need. From what I can tell from my research of Garmin.com/shop, Utah is a Mountain Central mapset and Nevada is 'West'. I guess that means I'll be needing to purchase two more SD cards ;-/

This leads me to another question though :-o In Mapsource I was able to select certain sections of mapping ((City Select) i.e. all of Idaho and then the immediate map sections of all the surrounding states) and then 'Transfer' those to my 60CS. Will I be able to do such a thing with BaseCamp and my 62 if I'm purchasing SD cards (for use in the GPS) instead of the DVD's (for installation in the PC)?

Yes. I'm not familiar with your device but on my eTrex you can get to a map info page that has the "copyright" info about each of the installed maps. That could give you a clue where they came from.

Then you're back in the same pickle of not being able to install the maps into Basecamp but having to have the SD card in either your device or in the computer in order to use them in Basecamp. That is, the maps are locked to the SD cards they come on and can't be copied.

As has already been stated, yes. But in Basecamp you need to use Map Install. It's a separate program but you can launch it from within Basecamp. It then works sort of like Mapsource, eg. you can select the various map tiles you want and send them to your device.

So, now I'm confused. I realize that I was the one that asked the question about selecting tiles but... I've got a new silly SD card and it is in my GPS. It is an authentic Garmin card with Topo maps for Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana ((Section #5) PN 010-C0952-00). There was a warning about trying to 'write' to the SD card because it'll overwrite everything on it (This I already knew) . How in the world do I select maps from that card and the other maps on the other card so that I'd have some coverage of the state lines of Utah ans Nevada? This is really goofy. If I bought another card from Garmin for the Nevada (Section #2) and Utah (Section #3) ... how in the world can I bring bits of each different card together to get onto my GPS exactly what I want? The problem is that I live in Burley, ID and the points where Idaho, Utah, and Nevada all meet up is practically in my backyard. I think I already goofed up by buying a SD card instead of a disc. If I buy the 24k maps on discs and install them on my computer, would I be able to say, "Mission Accomplished"?

You're right, if they're original Garmin cards supplied with the maps pre-installed they are locked to that card. In your situation the DVD option would have been better. All's not lost though. As they are locked to the card and not a device you could (if you wish) buy the maps on DVD and recoup some of the money by selling the cards. I hope after reading that link you are more comfortable that there is nothing wrong with your decision to get the new GPS unit. The problem is entirely with the map media that you have, eg. SD card versions versus DVD versions. You are correct that to get back to the situation you had previously requires that you get a DVD version of the maps you want. Or download some free ones for the equivalent areas.

As was pointed out, you can probably sell the SD card versions. Or if you have something that you purchased very recently, phone Garmin and see if you can exchange them for a DVD version with full credit for what you paid for the card version.
