Good evening.

I have downloaded Sub Saharan Africa Streetmapping product from the Garmin website. It has installed successfully on my Nuvi 3790 but does not appear in the Map Produc drop downs in Base Camp, even though other mapping products do.

Any help appreciated.

Ian.
  • When you downloaded the map was there an option to install to your PC and GPS? If not redownload the maps and this time select 'install to PC'. Note that this is available with most Garmin map downloads but I note while yours are Garmin maps they're supplied by Garmap in South Africa, and so I have no idea whether that option is available for this particular map?

Have you tried plugging your 3790 into your PC? If so does Basecamp read the map off your 3790?

When you purchase a City Navigator product via download, there is not going to be an option to install directly on your computer. It will just be a file to use on the GPS. As Sussamb said, plug the GPS into your computer and wait while Basecamp examines the file. It will then be available to view. Alternately, you can copy the file to a USB thumb drive (just copy the whole Map folder from the GPS to the thumb drive) and this will also work.

If you want to install maps directly on your computer, you must purchase the DVD version. The only exception would be if you purchased lifetime updates for the map that was originally provided on the Nuvi.

Thank you for you inputs. I have copied the 'Map' directory to a thumb drive. How do I import it to Bascamp? Trying File-Import in Basecamp does not see anything compatible on the thumb drive
  • You don't/can't 'import' it. If you've got the maps on a thumb drive then Basecamp will read the maps off it, as OSTROFF01 explained. If BC isn't seeeing your thumb drive (it should be listed in the left hand pane) just check it's formatted as FAT32? Also what files do you see in the Map folder?

Note there may be quite a delay initially while BC indexes the map ... if you look in the left hand pane you should see the thumb drive listed and you'll see a green line that slowly moves from left to right. I don't think the map will appear in the drop down list until that's complete. Once it's been indexed it will be much faster in future.

You might also try changing the name of the Map folder on the thumb drive to Garmin if it doesn't work. But for starters, just connect the GPS itself and see if Basecamp can read the map. If not, then something else must be wrong.

    Folks,
tried the above but while Basemap sees the thumb drive, it does not see any usable files in it. The significant file in the Map folder is 'SA_Streetmaps_2012_3' which is about 450Mb.
  • I usually buy the CD / DVD from Cape Union Mart or any other outdoor supplier, then load it to the GPS and PC at the same time. If you can get your product unlock code from the Garmap site this my be the way to go.
The data only version of the disk usually retails for around R 20-00 or so.
Otherwise perhaps call Garmin Distributors SA (GDA) and see if they can help. The support is usually very good.

Have you done what Boyd and I suggested? Connect your 3790 to Basecamp, does it see the map then? If it doesn't then it's another issue, and not simply a SD card problem.
