Backing up garmin file (maps) and moving to new computer

I had a need to format and do a reinstall of windows recently. Before doing this, I went to my c drive and copied the garmin file to a flash drive. Is there any way to now get the maps from my flash drive installed in basecamp? I have an older gps and do not wish to buy maps at this time. The one I have only expired the 26th of Nov. , about a week before my computer problem. I am not trying to cheat garmin in any way, only trying to get the maps back on my computer so I do not need to hook up the gps everytime. Any help appreciated.
  • Use JaVaWa GTMK to backup all maps an place them on any Windows or Mac computer. Install BaseCamp and you are ready.

    http://www.javawa.nl/gmtk_en.html

And in the Extra menu there is also an option to install Maps, but if you maps are in the old registery format, you probably did not export the registery entries for your old maps. (new maps have directory names ending at .gmap )

Convert you old maps from backup with JaVaWa MapConverter http://www.javawa.nl/mapconverter_en.html
Download the program, drag your old map to the convertor en choose convert and install.

Us GMTK to check the result on the PC and maybe to read the unlock codes from the backup or your GPS.
  • It's unclear to me anyway which 'Garmin file' the OP copied. Until we know more, whether or not GMTK will work is unknown ... and on the information given I suspect it won't.

I'm afraid it is a bit too late for that...

@[email protected]: which map did you have? (exact version), and what is the contents of your Garmin "file" (I presume it's a folder, not a file). You don't need to produce a complete list of all files; just check whether there are folders containing lots of files with the extension .img, or folders with names ending on .gmap.

Thanks to all for trying to help this old computer challenged dummy. I have the city navigator maps v7 for my old 2610 and the NT 2012.30 for my 765. The folders I have saved are:

1.Cnna7. There are many files in this folder ending in img
    2.Maps-global application basemap v.2.gmap
3.Maps(2) global application basemap v.2(2) .gmap
    4.USB drivers
The files not in folders are:
CondMgr.dll, License, Mapinstall Application (this is a 14mb file ), Mapsource Application (a 16mb file), Navteq OB, Unlock wizard application.
I do not know if this is the info you requested but hope it helps. Thanks again to all for your input.
  • 1. The CNNA v7 map can be restored by using JaVaWa MapConverter.
    2. and 3. (they are both the same) The global application basemap comes with BaseCamp; you don't need to reinstall these.
    4. The USB drivers (you will need them for your 2610) cannot be reinstalled from this folder, but you can download them from here: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=591

The NT 2012.30 map is gone... Contact Garmin directly by e-mail or phone and ask them to provide a download link. I know it is expired, but usually Garmin is willing to help.

I have one last question. I have basecamp and the 2012.3 maps on a netbook that I use when traveling. If the call to garmin fails, is there a way for me to transfer these to another computer?
  • In that case there is no need to bother Garmin...
Install JaVaWa GMTK on your netbook, use it to back up the map to a USB drive, and restore it with GMTK on the other computer.

Just completed the GMTK backup and restore. Worked like a champ. I saved the 2012.3 maps plus my topo maps.
