BaseStation for Base Camp

Where do I get the BaseStation Product? Does it require additional hardware?

The description from the Garmin Website -

Turn Your Computer Into a Base Station for Tracking Dogs

The all-new BaseStation lets you turn your laptop (loaded with BaseCamp) into a field control center for tracking multiple dogs and/or buddies (up to 20 Alpha units or TT 10 collars). View real-time GPS information on the larger display of your computer, making it ideal for canine search and rescue teams. And because it’s Garmin GPS-based, safer, more effective tracking is possible, even where Internet and cell phone service isn’t.
  • BaseStation mode works with the Alpha, Astro 320 and Rino 600 series.
  • I have been playing around with BaseStation for my Alpha. I can get my location as well as my dogs to show up on the laptop. My problem is as soon as I click on basestation in basecamp I loose all my Birdseye imagery. How do I get better back ground mapping in to basecamp ether birdseye or customs maps just something that gives more detail then Global Map.

This is a known issue. We will hopefully find a fix soon to display BirdsEye imagery and BaseStation data at the same time.

Do you have maps on the Alpha (other than BirdsEye)?

  • I am using Birdseye with very old Garmin Topo 2003 on a chip as a background map (CD Map Source Topo Ver 2.00). In 2010 I almost lost a dog that had fallen into a hog manure pit all I could see on my astro 220 screen was perfect circles and didn’t know why the dog wasn’t with the others. I saved the dog and after downloading the log data in to Google earth I found the dog had been in the pit for almost 20min. I have been waiting for something like Birdseye since that day. We Hunt in a somewhat populated area with busy roads its a constant battle keeping the dogs safe while crossing roads. It would really be great to be able to see the dogs on a bigger screen (like an I pad or Tablet) with some sort of aerial photo (BirdsEye or Custom Map). This would make things much faster and safer for me to relay dogs exact position to other hunters while driving or racing to protect the dogs crossing roads. The New Alpha with Birdseye is a great tool being able to see your salf and your dogs on a bigger screen will make it that much better.

RYANZ71. Great Question? I too am looking for much better mapping on Base station. I have custom maps from my local conservation authority that are satellite imagery and much better than the birds eye maps. I would like to be able to add my maps to base station and be able to track my dogs on Base Camp using these maps. I would settle for Birds eye as well but it almost seemed a waste paying for birds eye when it is only good for one year and does not work on my lap top in Base Station mode. The current maps just do not give enough detail to make Base Station worth using on my laptop in the truck and make it difficult keeping my dogs safe near roads as well. Hoping for some type of solution to this matter?

You can only download new maps for 1 year, you can use the maps you already downloaded for as long as you like.

I certainly understand that using BirdsEye or Custom maps in BaseStation mode would be hugely beneficial. We'll try to make that happen. It was just an oversight on our part. And it's also somewhat tricky because the device connects in a different mode than usual so we don't actually see the device maps when it's connected in BaseStation mode. But making the maps from My Collection available should be doable.

Thats fantastic. In the upper corner of BaseStation you can click on receive from device. If it can receive the maps from the handheld and overlay Birdseye it would be good to have them available to run in the background while using BaseStation. Thank you for working on this. Hopefully it is able to happen in the near future. thx again!
  • Great info.... But how do I switch into the 'BASE STATION MODE' from BasCamp? I am using the Astro product.
