What does GMAPPROM mean?

Why is basecamp frozen in it?

Find does not have address listed; not working the way the video demonstrates--not working the way Heko says it does.

How do I set my home location in Basecamp?

Why do I get shoved into backpacking when I've selected motorcycle?

How do I disable, remove backpacking? It isn't anything I will ever use; it just seems to make basecamp inoperable.

What will I gain by using basecamp that I cannot do with Mapquest? Mapquest works with out having to watch videos, or wade through dense help files.
  • GMAPPROM is the preloaded map on your device. If you have a Zumo it would be City Navigator. Did you ever install the City Navigator map on your PC? You should in order to use Basecamp (or Mapsource) with a Zumo. Your Zumo probably came with a DVD from which you can install City Navigator on your PC. I have a feeling that many of your problems are due to the lack of a City Navigator installation on your PC but I could be wrong.

The find address feature only works if you have a map selected in Basecamp that supports addresses such as City Navigator. The very basic basemap that comes with Basecamp does not support address searches hence you will not find addresses as a searchable field.

You can set a home location with the waypoint tool in Basecamp. It is a red flag on the menu bar, New Waypoint. Click on your home location on the map and name it to whatever you want.

Backpacking is one of several activity profiles that are part of Basecamp. If you click on the activity profile on the menu bar you will find an option, Edit Activity Profiles. Click on that and you will see the option, Edit the selected Activity profile (a blue pencil). Here you have the option to hide the activity profile. You can hide all activity profile except motorcycling if you want to.

I don't know Mapquest. If you are happy with Mapquest and it meets your needs then stick to it. There is a steep learning curve for Basecamp and you may not have the time nor patience to deal with it. I used Mapsource for many years but am now quite happy with Basecamp. To mention just a few, I like its editing tools, I like its organization of geodata, and I appreciate it being an offline application that I can use on a trip with no internet access.

To answer the question "what does gmapprom mean", I think it goes back to older days when PROM (Programmable Read Only Memory) was used to store maps on some of Garmin's devices. "gmap" means "Garmin Map". So "gmapprom" was a Garmin map that was provided in read-only memory on the device. The other traditional name is "gmapsupp" which refers to a "supplemental" Garmin map that the user could install.
  • BECKETMA, you mention GMAPPROM and Basecamp freezing. What may be happening is the following: In some cases Basecamp can read a map off a connected device if the PC does not have the map installed. Reading a map off a connected device will take a very long time the first time while Basecamp builds up a map cache on the PC. You may think that Basecamp is freezing. After this initial process map initialization will be a lot quicker next time you connect the device. Note that this process does not actually install the map on the PC. It just makes the map available in Basecamp when the device is connected.

Reading maps from a device is a possibility with some restrictions. You would be much better off if you install City Navigator on your PC. I have City Navigator and several other maps on my PC. These maps are all available to me in Basecamp. I select the map product that I want to use on the menu bar in Basecamp.
