Double Cue Points

I have yet to get my Garmin Edge 800 to navigate a route properly so today I'm being very careful about the route I'm planning. I've notice that when I'm planning a route in Basecamp about 30% of the time I click a new point on the map for my route I'm getting a kind of "double" point. In other words the point I just clicked and another point either just before/after or just to the side of the one I clicked. The effect being that when I move the pencil cursor to place the next point on the map the "line" to the previous point doesn't now end at the cursor but goes out to the cursor and back to the "ghost" point next to the one I've just inserted. It's taking me ages to plan this route because it happens time and time again and I have to erase the "double" point and enter it again, sometimes several times until I get a single point. I'm wondering if this is why when I'm navigating with my GPS I'm not getting proper turn directions and I keep seeing the unit pointing back down the route I've just come up.
Has anybody else noticed this when planning a route in Basecamp and is there a solution? It's REALLY annoying.

Hi, have you tried using something like www.ridewithgps.com to plot your routes? It's very simple and the guidance is also good. You can export to gpx, tcx or crs.
I find that gpx tends to work best for me.
Load the file onto the Garmin, load it up then make sure turn by turn directions are ON (in the settings, hit the spanner icon after the course loads up)
Might be worth a try. I never have any problems using this method.
Just ask if there's any steps you're not sure about.

I have tried ridewithgps but I'm having navigation problems. I'm using it for cycling and my problem is that there are a lot of cycle access t-junctions, one way street cycle contra flows etc which may well be on the ridewithgps site when I'm planning the route which are not all on the internal maps (even though I have OSM maps as well as Garmin, though not enabled at the same time) and so my Edge 800 does some very bizarre rerouting on GPX files I load into it from rwgps. I've resorted to Basecamp so that I can plan the course using the maps that are actually in the unit to resolve this issue. The problem is Basaecamp is software for which Garmin should hang their heads in shame (in fact they should hang their heads in shame for the Edge 800 as well). In the meantime if I want to continue to use Basecamp for the reason specified I still have this really annoying time consuming double point issue. Due to the lack of replies to this thread I wonder if I'm the only person experiencing this?
  • This occasionally happens to me, but in my case it is a mouse problem. You might try going to the window control panel and adjust the double click speed and check other options. But if you are seeing it only in BaseCamp, I doubt it will help. If it happens elsewhere, it might also help to disconnect the mouse, open it and blow out any dust, paying close attention to the switches.

I don't think it's a mouse problem, I use this computer for very intricate graphic work and never have any problems other than in Basecamp. I'm wondering if it's an issue with the map on the Edge 800 (I'm using the velomap from OSM maps) if no one else is experiencing this to the extent I am. I'm going to experiment with the City Nav maps and see if I have the same problem.
  • I think you should probably just disconnect your GPS and try making a route with the Global map for starters. If you have an old mouse sitting around, I would give it a try also. It’s a good idea to cover a few possibilities in situations like this.

Like I said, I would expect mouse problems to show up in general use. But it’s also hard for me to image software inserting phantom events (i.e. a mouse click should come from the system and not the software). I could imagine problems being more likely with a wireless mouse than a wired one, but again, it should happen everywhere. My problems are with a wacom tablet. The stylus works fine, but the mouse gives me fits.

    Anyway, good luck.
