Zumo 350LM lacks necessary track importing and manipulation capability

The recently released (Q3 2012) Garmin Zumo 350LM appears to lack track import capability. Independent testing as well as discussions with Garmin Dealer Tech Support confirm this.

The Zumo 350 tested was updated with the only OS service pack update to date.

Testing shows:

1. Sample track created in either Basecamp 4.0.2 or Mapsource 6.16.3 and exported to the device is not resolved. No record of any track shows when the device is on. The file sent is queued as a "Temp" file in the /GPX folder but no further manipulation or import is done in the device.
2. Routes are correctly resolved and appear.
3. Waypoints are correctly resolved and appear.
4. TracBack feature works properly.

The entire Zumo model line as of date has allowed for advanced track importation and manipulation. However, the Zumo 350LM has departed from this advanced and necessary feature routinely used by off and on road motorcycle enthusiasts. Other disciplines use tracks on Zumo's as well.

Questions?

1. Was this a design feature that was purposly deleted? If so why?
2. Can a firmware or software upgrade be pushed to the device to reinstate this functionality to mirror other Zumo models if warranted?
3. Are there any current or immediate workarounds or alternates available?
  • The zumo 210/200 doesn't handle tracks either. I don't know what you mean by "advanced" track importation "and manipulation", but the only thing what the zumo 550 and 660 do is convert a track to a route. You can do that in BaseCamp too.

I have just stumbled across this issue as well. I can make a track in BaseCamp and then push it to my 350LM, but I cannot find any control to make that track visible on my screen. Garmin, please help!!!

Beuhller? Anyone? This would be a fantastic feature to have, particularly when other Zumos costing the same or less already have it.
  • Can you import routes (trips) from device to PC?

Yes, the 350 allows one to pull routes (trips) and even tracks off of the unit onto the PC. One can also take a track from someone else or made in BaseCamp and push it to the 350, but there is then no way to cause it to appear on screen, which I view as an oversight that ought to be corrected.
  • Thanks for info. Reading tracks from unit to PC is a standard option, you can do it even with a simple nuvi. What's interesting is:
-Create a trip in trip planner on zumo and then import it to BaseCamp, is it possible?
-Send a track from PC to device and then navigate this track, can zumo 350 do this?

You're welcome. I will have to try this and get back to you.

No, this is not possible. One can send the track to the Zumo 350, but there is no option on the 350 that I can find to make the track visible on screen. If Garmin would add that feature to the 350, it would make the unit much more popular. I know people who did not buy it because of this lack. Had I understood that it did not have this (you could argue that I should not have made any assumptions before purchase) then I would not have bought it either. Now, I am just hoping that Garmin will invest the relatively minor development resources to port the code over from other Garmin units that allow this.
  • You can convert track to route in BaseCamp, send route to zumo and then navigate it. I have heard, that zumo can follow route without recalculation, this could be similar to navigating a track. Could you investigate this possibility too?

I'll certainly give it a try.

I managed to export a route to my 350lm but when the track has more than 29 Points it's haced up to bits and pieces.
I have a long trip from my broken 500 and when sending it to the 350 it was hacked up in over 50 bits.
But I can only find about 10 of them in my unit?
