Uploading a trip to my Garmin Nuvi 3590

We have a van that makes a round to different customers each day. The van goes a different direction each day and goes to a different selection of customers each time. On any given day the van will go to about 8-10 customers.

On my Garmin Nuvi 3590 there is a Trip planner. You can add several addresses.

How can I upload a trip to my Garmin. Is it just uploading a set of waypoints. Does anything else have to be done to identify this as a trip for the Garmin Nuvi 3590?

I am going to use Communicator Plugin API to upload my trip to the device at the end of the day for the driver to have the next morning.

Thanks for helping me to get started, John
  • What are you planning to use to send the trip to your nuvi? If Basecamp then yes, you can create a route and send it as a trip to your nuvi. See this FAQ from Garmin:

To access a transferred route in a zumo 350, dezl series, LIVE series, or nuvi 2400, 2405, 2505, 3400, 3500, or 3700 series device:

    1.Touch Apps
◦Touch Tools on the dezl 560 series
    2.Touch Trip Planner
3.Allow time for the device to automatically import the trip/route
These Trip Planner devices will take several minutes to automatically import trips into the Trip Planner. The import will automatically begin, but no message will appear on the device indicating that the import is happening. Once the import is complete, all transferred routes will be displayed under a category called Unscheduled Trips in the Trip Planner.1 Until the trips show up in Trip Planner, please do not turn off the device or connect it to a computer.

*Please note: When routes are imported to your Garmin device, the route may change due to navigation settings within your device.

1 Units that create routes using Trip Planner cannot send routes to MapSource or BaseCamp. However, units that utilize Trip Planner will be able to receive routes from BaseCamp and MapSource
  • Default Don't even bother with Basecamp.
Use mapquest, save it to "new trip" and rename it. Then click on the send tab top right and SEND TO my Garmin GPS. Pluck it in first. Your trip can be found on your Garmin under Apps (Nuvi 3590), in Trip Planner. I had to break my trip into two trips, there, and back because Garmin GPS's are incapable of saving long routes or trips. No one seems to know if it is because of the amount of stops or the amount of miles that causes it not to show up on the GPS itself. This is a something that Garmin clearly needs to work on while they are firing the person who created Base Camp.

It's neither, but a combination of the 2 plus the complexity of the route, eg number of turns. There is only so much processing power in any GPS :)

I have a bunch of tracks and routes that I created in Google Maps (for my cycling team) and then imported to basecamp as KML files (as a track) then created a route from track (still in basecamp) then I have sent these routes and tracks to my Edge 800 for cycling without too many problems.

I now want to send the same routes (from basecamp or GPSies) to my 3590LM so that the service vehicle can also follow the cycling team's route if we get separated whilst travelling through Europe.

    Now to the problem,

When I send the route to the 3590LM in basecamp it seems to receive it in the normal way, but when I remove the USB cable and start the 3590LM I cannot find the routes in there.
I have tried Apps and then Trip Planner (and waiting for it to find them) but it remains blank.

Are the files corrupted in some way because they are originally created in Google Maps and saved as KML (and converted in basecamp)?
To test this theory I exported the routes as gpx from basecamp and tried to send them from GPSies to the NUVI.... same sort of thing happened, it appeared to receive the files but I cant find them in the Nuvi....

    Is this even possible?
