How To Continue Route?

Every time I try and plan a route with Basecamp I have to abandon it in frustration. I start the route inserting points where I want them happily swapping backwards and forwards with the route tool and the hand tool to move the map around and then invariably I get halfway through the route and Basecamp has decided I've finished with this route and there seems to be no way of continuing the route I was planning. In the route properties tab the "add waypoint" symbol is always greyed out. If I try clicking on the last point in the route and then add another point it just starts a new route. I've only got 3 miles down the road with 5 points AAGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can someone please tell me how you can continue adding to a route you were working on.
God I hate this software. Couple that with USB 1.0 technology and their latest Edge 800 "The device is connected with limited speed. This may affect the performance of BaseCamp"......that's your device you rip-off merchants at Garmin!! (oh and the discoverer maps that cost £200 come on 2nd hand micro SD cards!)
Garmin should be utterly ashamed of themselves although they're probably way too busy drinking champagne and laughing at the mugs that have actually believed the reviews and bought their shoddy unfit for purpose products. It really says something about a company when they can't even be bothered to check the manual is correct.
  • The Route and Measure tools don’t really work all that well when you switch back and forth with the Hand/Pan tool on the tool bar. I’m not sure about the track tool. So you need to learn other ways to move the map.

How to move the map without using the Hand/Pan tool:

    1. Use the Map Overview Tool. This can be toggled on and off as needed from the tool bar (Square with square inside of it) or the View/Map Views menu without changing the focus of the Measure or Route tool. When you move the cursor into that window, it will change to hand and you can move the map by holding down the left mouse button and dragging the mouse. This is the method I would recommend for what you are doing.

    2. The Map Contol thingy. I have mine set on auto (also under the view menu). When you move the mouse over the blue arrow in the upper left corner, you will see the pan/zoom controls.

    3. Map Edge. When you move the mouse near the edge of the map window it will change to a large arrow. A left button click on the mouse will pan the map in the direction of the arrow.

    4. The arrow buttons on the key board.

I’m not too fond with methods 2-4 because the pan movement is too fine (in my opinion). Twenty clicks to move from one edge to the other are too many.

If you need to extend a route, I would suggest using the Move Point tool to move the last point in your route to your intended final destination and the switching to the insert (pencil) tool to fill in points as needed between the last and next to last points. Of course, you could do this in steps (Move, Insert, Move, Insert etc.). Also, you should be switch between these tools and the Hand/Map tool without causing any problems.

I’m not much of a computer geek, but the USB message may be coming from your system. I would suggest an internet search on “Garmin USB drivers” and update the drivers on your system. Another possibility is that USB port you are using is causing the problem. Try using different ports to see if that has an effect.

I would suggest you check to see how much it would cost to purchase comparable paper maps (same level of detail) for the same area of coverage. I suspect Garmin’s price will better in comparison.

I don’t use the routing tools that much, but I’m sure there are others familiar with you map product (I’m not) that could give some tips if you were more specific about what kind of a route you are trying to build (walking, road, trail etc). If you are building a direct route, it might be easier to make it as trail first (like I said, I’m sure if switch between Hand/Pan and the trail tool has any issues) and then convert it to a route from the trail properties window. You might find it helpful to increase the detail level slight higher. This should allow you to zoom out a little more and still see all the roads/trails. Downside is that it will slow down redrawing the map.

    Try this...

Highlight the route. Hover the Insert Tool [pencil] over the very last point in your route until a fuzzy black dot appears. Left mouse click and you can stretch the route forward. Takes patience to get the dot to appear.

We introduced something new in 4.0.2, I believe. Try using Ctrl + arrow keys and it should pan in bigger steps.

Why do we have to go back to hitting a combination of key strokes or delicate maneuvers when the old way of switching back and forth between tools while creating a route worked perfectly fine ??? When I start my route zoomed in and then zoom out or move the map using the hand tool, the vector or "Rubber band" attached to the routing tool is gone. It's one thing to be creating a route to the next town, it's a whole other story when planning a trip across the country trying to use back roads. I've been creating my routes with Garmin software for years switching between tools and now that I upgraded to 4.0.2.0 I'm back too a primitive program.

Would love to know the logic of killing a perfectly good function. Think about panning using the up/down left/right button while trying to move around the whole country and zooming in and out from small roads. That sucks !!!

I apologize for the trouble. That's clearly a bug, we'll try to fix it soon.

Have there been any updates to this issue? Still unable to plan routes easily for my rides. Maybe if there was a way to "add on" or continue a route where it is currently ended that might work.
  • The best way has already been described above. Move the end point of the route to where you want the new end point. Then use the insert tool to add waypoints between the old end point and the new one. Works really well :)

Switching between the hand tool and new route button works fine (for me) in 4.0.5. Pressing the new route button after moving the map with the hand tool brings me back to the rubber band... of the route I was editing

I'm using Basecamp 4.0.4 with my Mac. When I try to update to the above mentioned 4.0.5 it tells me I have the most current version. Are you using some kind of bata or perhaps a PC version?

In the meantime I'm trying to create routes using the above mentioned, however it also appears I can no longer make adjustments to the route like in the past by pulling on the route in the manner of pulling a wet noodle to a different road.

I can create waypoints and arrange them in the routing roster to create a route, however still more cumbersome than simply keeping the routing tool active while switching back and forth between tools such as the hand tool and zoom tool.
  • You posted in the Windows section, See here for 4.0.5

but from your post you are running a Mac? That will explain the version difference :)
