Find dropdow has most POI categories missing for TOPO Australia+New Zealand 2010 map

For Garmin map "City Navigator Europe 2010" and all the OpenStreetMaps, when I click the down arrow just to the right of the Find toolbar, it lists
  • All POI
  • Address
  • Cities
  • Garmin Adventures
  • Geocaches
  • Attractions
  • Auto Services
  • Bank/ATM
  • etc.

I have just purchased the Garmin TOPO Australia+New Zealand 2010 map on DVD, installed, unlocked, displays absolutely fine in all respects BUT the menu lists only
  • All POI
  • Address
  • Cities
  • Garmin Adventures
  • Geocaches
  • Transportation

Not
  • Attractions
  • Auto Services
  • Bank/ATM
  • Lodging
  • plus 10 other top level categories
  • etc.

This makes searching for a specific POI in a city next to totally useless.

I am using BaseCamp 4.0.2 on a Windows XP SP3 PC.

Can Falagar or someone in Garmin confirm whether this is a bug in BC 4.0.2. I am desperate for a workaround so I can search for Lodging > Campground. The description for this map says "Displays more than 1.5 million points of interest" however if they can't be "found" then it makes this purchase useless. I could have just used my existing OpenStreetMap.

Would it be better to send an email direct to Garmin support? My past experience is you don't get a reply. Thanks in advance for any help.

    Please read this thread.

BC 4.0.2 will show all POI's in you maps.

I am not aware of a bug in 4.0.2 that would prevent the categories from showing up. Do they show up in MapSource?

You say it's a Topo map, it's entirely possible that the Topo map doesn't have the categories. Do you see them on the device?

There is no problem with BC 4.0.2 and TOPO AU + NZ (see the image below)

There was a whole thread (which I linked to in my previous post) about the map find cache. That is most likely the issue.

Thanks, STUARTMW, I missed that. (And had forgotten about that issue.)

Andrew, try to delete the product cache as outlined in the post linked by STUARTMW. See if that fixes the issue.

Glad the fix worked for you.

The issue, as you saw, is that find Map Find cache methodology was changed a few versions ago. The new version saw the existing file but did not rebuild it.

FYI "Master" on this forum is based purely on the number of posts. That said I've been using Garmin units & software for about 12 years so I'll accept the label :)

Well if the machine had an older version (3.x) of Basecamp and the map was also installed there should have been an existing md*.bin file containing the map find cache. BaseCamp 4.x uses a different methodology for the map cache but uses the same filenames (md*.bin). That was the issue in the previous thread (not this one). Presumably the cache files don't contain a version/format so the newer BaseCamp just tries to use the older format cache file(s) and barfs.

I see no reason why a new install on another machine would have an issue. That said you MUST allow BaseCamp to create the cache file. Since the entire map product must be searched to do this it can take some time (minutes). That said you should only need to do this once.

BTW map find cache files are not created automatically. The map product has to be selected (and displayed). Older versions of BaseCamp would display a status message asking you to wait while the cache was created, Newer versions don't.

I am going to install the map (2010) on a 3rd PC & check whether the md*.bin is created by the map install, or whether BC creates it the 1st time the map is selected.

FYI I don't use the installer on map CD's/DVD's. The version of software that comes on the media is almost always out of date. I therefore manually install the maps by copying the .gmap folder on the CD/DVD to the appropriate folder (depends on the OS) on my HD.

I'm not sure what version of BC is on the TOPO Australia+New Zealand DVD but it's probably 2.x. It is certainly possible the installer creates the md*.bin cache files so your experiment will be interesting.

BTW if I'm installing everything on a new PC (not often) I just use the software install packages I've downloaded, and archived, from the Garmin website.

PS: I've been able to confirm that the TOPO Australia & New Zealand v3 (2010?) DVD comes with BaseCamp 3.0.5. If you use the installer on the DVD and then run BaseCamp (3.0.5) you'll certainly create md*.bin files incompatible with 4.0.2 resulting in the problem you originally posted about.
