Refresh Device List

If I am working in BC and connect the device BC never adds it to the device list. Windows sees it and knows it's been connected. Have to close BC and reopen for it to recognize the device. Major PIA considering how long it takes BC to get going. Any chance to get a refresh (right click--refresh device list) option for devices? Or just have BC listen for new devices. MapSource always picked up when a device was added.

  • Which version of BC are you using? Mine picks up a new device just fine, both my nuvi and Etrex 20.

    BC 4.0.2
    Windows XP SP3

Behavior is not new. Been that way from the beginning and I just kept thinking it would resolve itself. Tried it this morning with a route I wanted to transfer and same thing. Restart BC and there it is. In MapSource there was a 'find device' button if it doesn't show. Be nice to have that here as well on the transfer to device pop up or a right click menu.

  • Ensure you're plugging the GPS directly into a USB socket on the PC, and not via a USB hub, that's often the cause of GPSs not being detected by the PC.

Ah but as I said in the first post Windows sees it and lists it. It's listed in device manager as Garmin USB GPS. And it is indeed plugged straight into the box.

  • It's possible to be seen by Windows but not by other programs, however if it's plugged straight into the box that's clearly not the issue :)

Maybe someone else might have an idea, but it's certainly not a BC issue as my devices have always been detected when they are plugged in.

That's exactly the issue. It's seen by windows but not by BaseCamp. Where it's plugged in is immaterial since windows sees it. MapSource sees it. BaseCamp doesn't.

Can't agree with that one. Just because it happens to work on your box proves nothing one way or the other that I can see. Why does it find it if I restart BC? That gives me an indication that it's not listening for new devices. What OS are you running?

  • I meant that if it's plugged straight into your PC that's not the issue here :)

I run Win 7 on my laptop, SP3 on my desktop, both detect my devices and always have done, which is why I don't believe it's a BC issue ...

You might try a different cable, I've seen various posts where a cable problem has caused issues.
  • Which device are you using? Make sure you aren't running MapSource at the same time (or any other Garmin software), as they can fight over the device.

I know this is an older thread, but in looking for other info, I ran across it. I have to agree with Sourjon. I have had problems with the Venture HC where it connected all ok. Then while connected I deleted some waypoints on the GPS. The Venture device listing did not change in BC. I turned the GPS off and back on to refresh the list. It was not recognized by BC until I shut down and restarted BC. Then it was recognized with the new list info. It seems that BC needs a refresh button for the device, just a Sourjon stated. Thanks
