BaseCamp 4.0.2

Hi, I am a newbie to some of the GPS features and this is the first time I am trying to manually enter GPS coordinates.
Questions - currently when I try to enter the coordinates for a new waypoint - BaseCamp appears to have some feature that want to
a.) show me correct format to enter the data
b.) correct the data format as I am entering - not waiting until I have completed my entry.

I would be nice to have that check happen AFTER I have entered the data.....but it seems to check after I enter each coordinate.

Anyway to turn the "check ahead" type feature off.

Also, I have had some luck with entering some locations but I it seems to work better when I change the format of the GPS coordinates.
Under - Option / Measurements / Position - if I change my "Grid" to "Lat / Lon hddd.ddddd" - Datum = WGS 84. This seems (to me) to work better than "Lat / Lon hddd mm.mmmm"

sample data
N29.55036 W95.09474

i am a m/c rally person and have 200 waypoints to enter - so am I better off using the POI Loader to get all my waypoints entered?
  • Basecamp is capable of using a number of position formats, clearly if you set it to read one format and then try to enter a different format it will cause problems. Your sample is in decimal degrees, so that's why it works when you select the decimal degree format :)

As for using POI loader, it may or may not be better for you depending on how your data is already stored and whether entering it is a 'one off' or recurrent task.

    Hi,
Basecamp adapts all points u enter, but since te points u have are in hddd.ddddd u need to set basecamp in that format to if u don't want them to be changed. If u chance it afterwards to
hddd mm.mmmm it does not move your waypoints, it just shows u the hddd mm.mmmm
instead of hddd.dddd. The point u provided with your post ends up at NASA rd1, is that correct?
  • I have noticed the same thing, regardless of format. If values are out of range, too many digits, etc. it will attempt to "correct" your entry including rounding off the decimals resulting in the entry being wrong. Some times I've just wanted to "correct" the existing entry and I've wound up "fighting" with this feature! As with the OP, I would like to see the option of disabling or delaying that feature. Also, when there is an error, the "balloon" advising you covers up most of the entry so it is difficult to see exactly what is wrong. This error balloon also occurs with waypoint name, etc.

Make sure you are using BaseCamp 4.0. I think we made this a lot less annoying, i.e. we only check once you are done typing and hit Enter. The balloon is still a bit in the way, I'll check if we can change that.
