Im new to the gps thing so here we go. I have an etrex HCx. According to the guy at Garmin Bcamp should allow me to pull up the maps off of the 24k chip in the gps and allow me to creat maps using the more detailed maps. IT not showing up as an option any ideas. Thanks :D
  • Basecamp isn't capable of creating 'maps', or do you mean routes? Basecamp should certainly read any maps you have on your Etrex, allow you to create a route on your PC using Basecamp and then send that back to your Etrex. What part of that isn't working?

    Hi,

Hook up your eTrex to your pc, and Basecamp will read the map from your eTrex (this takes a will the first time) when its don, double click on the map (U see the map name now) and u can work on the map in basecamp making, waypoints, routs and transferring them to your device, It will NOT copy the map to your PC, and basecamp will not copy maps to your Device, u need Map install for that.

If u have your maps on CD/DVD u are allowed to install them on your PC, that way u can work on the map without hooking up your eTrex.

    So with basecamp u can:
    Create/edit/delete/transfer waypoints
    Create/edit/delete/transfer Routes
    Create/edit/delete/transfer Tracks
    Create/edit/delete/transfer Custom Maps
    Create/edit/delete/transfer Bridseye view images

    U can not:
Transfer maps (i.e citynavigator, topo maps) u need Map install for that.

    I hope this helps u a bit….

First off I've heard, via posts here, that BaseCamp sometimes doesn't recognize pre-programmed Garmin map cards. Since I don't have any I can't verify its operation one way or the other.

When BaseCamp read maps from a device (e.g. one with pre-loaded maps such as a nuvi) it shows a progress bar under the device name at the left of the screen

Can I view my preloaded, downloaded, or preprogrammed map data on my computer?

PS: pre-programmed map cards and pre-loaded maps are different things.
