Getting waypoints and routes from BaseCamp to Montana.

I have made a set of waypoints for a short trip, with 5 routes using MapSource. In the past I could quickly transfer them all to my 2610. That broke and I've now got a Montana 650t.

As the Montana won't work with MapSource, I've loaded the .gdb file produced by MS into BC.

I've then selected the Montana and sent the waypoints and route to Montana. However, they can't be found in the waypoint list or route list.

Is it now impossible to plan a trip on a computer and transfer to the GPSr?

OK 14 views but no solution.

I upgraded 3.3.3 to 4.0.1 and it exited with a panel to send a report. Did this twice.

I found that by connecting the Montana in USB mode, I could open both volumes of the Montana in Windows folders. Found the waypoint.gpx file and opened it with MapSource.

Then I opened the .gdb file with my new waypoints and routes with a second instance of MS. I selected and copied all waypoints, then went back to the instance with waypoint.gpx and pasted the new waypoints. Then saved the waypoint.gpx file over the original one in the Montana.

The waypoints are now on my Montana, but can't yet find a file on the Montana to do the same with the routes.

    FAO: GARMIN SUPPORT.

This is a most clumsy downgrade for new hardware and software.

  • I am using a Montana 650 and BC 4.0.1. I have been using MS until recently but am now quite happy with BC. This is how I handle old routes:

    1. Open MS with the route(s) I want. Mark the route(s) and Copy
    2. Open BC and Paste the route(s) into a suitable list
    3. Recalculate with the new mapset in BC (and Montana), adjust as needed
    4. Connect the Montana to BC
    5. Drag the route(s) to the Montana
    6. Disconnect the Montana
    7. On the Montana push Find and then Routes
    8. Click on the route that I want to drive
    9. Push Go and let the Montana recalculate

That's it. No need to use Windows Explorer. Only issue that I have is that the Montana does not respect the via point "Don't alert" feature of BC like the Zumo does.

Incidentally, transfering waypoints and routes from MS to Montana works fine in my setup. MS does support Montana. There must be some other reason for the dificulties that you are experiencing.

If you use something (MapSource) other than BaseCamp to transfer your data to the Montana you will fine some issues. For example, if you transfer Waypoints and Routes that use some of those Waypoints to the Montana with MS you will get multiple entries (duplicates) of the Waypoints in the Waypoint Manager. You will also have all of your transferred data read into active memory since it is in one GPX file. Whereas with BaseCamp you will have separate GPX files for each Track, Route and Waypoint or group of related Waypoints. The BaseCamp way is much more efficient (for the Montana) and the Montana will preform much better - especially when navigating a Route or a Track.

    Cheers,
